Swans vs Forest

Even Cooper admitted that we were poor and that improvement will be necessary; vital I would say. We weren't at the races tonight apart from that one spot of excellence that won us a game we surely didn't deserve to. Forest had nearly twice as many attempts at goal than we did and more on target as well. The players need to wake up and realise just what it is they're playing for because it looked as if they didn't care tonight. Some stats:

POSSESSION: 53-47 SHOTS: 5-11 OT: 2-3 CORNERS: 7-6 FOULS: 9-10 GOALS: 1-0

By the way, on the highlights’ video take a look at Roberts goal from the view behind the goal and the way he launches himself at the ball. First, he almost missed the ball ... mistimed a tad and had to duck into it. Second, what a leap ... reminded me of the way Puyol used to attack corners for Barca ... totally fearless. Forest defenders didn’t know what was coming, they didn’t have a prayer.

when games are tight, it takes but one totally committed and fearless act to win the game. We have players in Roberts, Ayew, Bidwell, Fulton that can do that.

Whilst Forest created 6 or 7 half-chances, each of them with small expected goal value, we created one chance with high expected goal value.
Roberts had a free header from the six-yards box line, and only Forest goalkeeper to beat.

With other words, we created more than Forest, and deserved to win the game.

They had 2 that I felt for sure were going in. Knockaerts shot at the end of the first half and the one across the goal in the second. We should be creating more chances. We have had some divine intervention this season to go along with our defenses.

That's for sure! We'll have to play an awful lot better to justify current bookies' odds of 5/6 to win promotion. Norwich are 2/9 and Brentford 2/5 whilst Cardiff after their fine recent run have come in from 40/1 to 18s.

Historically we have never played well after a 'long' break and we were well off the pace against Forest with Hoory one of the main culprits to be honest. He never got going but then neither did any of the midfield to any effect. Thank goodness our defence did what it's been doing so well but I only saw Connor and Ayew really busting a gut in this game. Connor's value must be soaring. In addition to his superb header his tracking back at speed to get in a possible goal-saving tackle was brilliant - but we need the rest of them to be equally committed.

At the moment our play is sloppy, disjointed and painfully slow. We have no rhythm, no fluency in our game and our passing accuracy stats must be at all time recent low. Fortunately, Cooper seems aware of this but the trick is to get the message across to the players who seem to think that a game of football is an afternoon stroll. This attitude needs to stop immediately else we'll miss out for a certainty.

I've pointed out many times here that we have structural problems.

One of them is passing accuracy. We can't have either rhytm or fluency in our game as long as our passing accuracy is criminally low compared to ol' good Swanselona's.
I was so disappointed with our passing in the first half against Forest that I said I'd rather watch MLS. I couldn't believe my eyes how poor we were.

Another problem is that we don't have a proper nr. 10. We had Morgan Gibbs-White, but he played only a couple of games for us. We really need a physically strong and creative ATM. Someone who can provide through balls and attack through the middle.
Dhanda is neither physical nor creative enough. He tends to drift towards the right wing and feed Roberts who then puts crosses into opposition box. He often slows down our transitions and passes the ball backwards whenever there is a slight obstacle in front of him. @KVetch mentioned Ayew as a possible solution, and I agree. He could play there slightly behind Morris/Whittaker and Lowe/Whittaker.
Hourihane, Fulton and Smith have always been either defensive or central midfielders. Ayew has physicality, his hold-up play is excellent, he can jump and win aerial duels, he can tackle, he can provide killer through balls, and he can score. He is a complete player, and we need a complete player in that position. Without a proper ATM we are one-dimensional. We attack mostly down the wings, and more than a half of our assists comes from our full-backs.

Third, our pressing game is not good enough. We rarely press as a team. The consequence is two tired forwards who run and run and run, without being able to disposses opposition. Here is an example of excellent pressing:

The problem is we don't do this as often as we should. We were brave against Manchester City. If Dhanda (and some other players) had been more creative, had we not made personal mistakes, and had Woody been better at narrowing the angles, we could've beaten them.

Fourth, we still don't know how to punish teams who press us high. I think we had more than ten opportunities to punish Manchester City, and we failed to do that. We rarely pass us out of high pressing, but being able to pass us out of high pressing should be a norm, not an exception. We panic, and we either hoof the ball or make sloppy passes. With other words, we lose possession, and invite unnecessary pressure.

Cooper has to tell our players to keep the ball
on the ground when there are passing options.
This is how not to pass from the back.

Cooper has to establish a simple rule: if we have passing options, pass the ball, and if we don't, then hoof it. The latter is called clearance. You clear the ball from a dangerous area when you are under pressure, and you don't have any passing options.

I am getting tired of our inability to pass from the back and keep possession. It was our own fault that we were put under enormous pressure against Manchester City. We gifted them the ball time after time, which was not the result of their high pressing, but rather because of our stupidity.

The same aginst Nottingham Forest.
