I was very impressed with Columbia tonight. They looked the business - played with skill, flair, passed the ball well, tackled for their lives and countered with blinding pace. Reckon they're going to be a handful for any team and England might have to play them!

I think England would have preferred Poland to go through as they're more used to their style of football. Germany not looking good so I think that either Spain or Belgium could win this. But after tonight Columbia is my dark horse!

A lot of the (lesser) International Teams have been impressive so far. The bookies could possibly be in for a pounding.

Germany nearly dumped the other day and tonight Spain given an almighty shock by Morocco. What with Iran holding Portugal it seems like the minnows have been fighting back. Some of these so-called 'lesser' teams look better than Wales to me!

To be fair most teams look better than Wales.... Because they are!

What about VAR & the prima Donna refs then??
I find that for the most part VAR is working reasonably well. It's not perfect but I doubt we'll ever have a system that's entirely foolproof. When they speed up the process I think it'll prove a great aid to the officials. Some of these decisions are almost impossible for the human eye to spot at real speed so fine are the margins, with literally inches in it at times. Remembering the many atrocious decisions that went against the Swans in the PL, some of them ridiculously blatant, I think overall it's a force for the good.

As for the refs and their assistants, don't get me started on them!! There have been a few decent performances but many of them have been nothing short of abysmal. How in the name of Hades England weren't awarded at least two penalties against Tunisia is way beyond my comprehension.......... and there have been equally ludicrous decisions in other games. VAR would have sorted most of them but often, for some obscure reason, was not consulted.

IMO they are doing it wrong, the var refs should tell the ref to halt play while they review an incident. Their decision can then be relayed to the ref who can then issue his cards, penalty or whatever meanwhile the var refs should upload footage to the big screen so supporters can see what they have based their decision on. No need for the ref to review , no need to ask for an incident to be reviewed , if the var refs are doing their jobs properly and impartially it would speed things up and give a level playing field for all teams.

It's still early days though and given time, the issues you raise will be addressed. Until they get it right though, we're in for a period of trial and error.

I understand how VAR eliminates blatant errors of judgement or incidents unseen, but I feel there are times when human error should be accepted, imo it's beginning to make the game mechanical. For instance it's reaching the point where a players big toe is ruling him offside.Surely a referee's decision in instances like this,a human element where he believes what he sees stands, rather than have it scrutinised for half a minute by four people to arrive at a decision.Goal line Tech. is nailed on, but I feel there's room for a lot of adjustments yet in VAR

Germany dumped out of the WC today by S. Korea! What a crazy game. The Koreans had umpteen chances to score on the break but a combination of crap finishing and a lack of composure when they had men to spare, nearly cost them. Germany dominated but always looked vulnerable on the break. It took a VAR decision to correctly overturn an offside flag to give them a late lead and then the German keeper lost possession in the middle of the park that led to Son slotting into an empty net. Lots of excitement and I enjoyed the game.

On this occasion VAR saw justice done.

They’ve grown into the contest I thought they showed promise from the off, once they’d shaken off the ‘just got off the bus-itis’

Yes, there's so much talent in that team. They've got the lot: movement, flair, skill, pace and they can dish out the rough stuff if they have to. Love him or loathe him, that Neymar is a hell of a player. I'm wondering if Jenkins is considering a bid..... for his big toe!!! :giggle:

This World Cup never ceases to amaze with results, the bookies must be rubbing their hands after that German result. Probably £millions and £millions bet on them getting through.Definitely the most unpredictable W/Cup tournament I've ever watched.Made the viewing so much better with the predictable results out the window. I suppose it's fair to say that the top Euro leagues ie- the Prem , La Liga,Bundesliga etc. have enhanced the chances of the African Nations and other (lesser) countries with so many of their Internationals now playing in Europe.
