Those who saw Holland beat the USA 3-1 will no doubt agree that they had the quality players and controlled the game with and without the ball. But let's take a moment to praise the effort of the USA team who, unlike the Welsh players, took a lot of pride in their performance and gave it a real go.
Some stats (Holland first):
POSSESSION: 42-58 SHOTS: 11-17 OT: 6-8 PASSES: 415-569 TOUCHES IN OPPO BOX: 18-34 FOULS: 10-5 CORNERS: 4-5
For a team that lost by two goals those are impressive stats. USA had more possession; more shots; more on target; more passes; and more touches in the opponents box (almost twice as many in fact!!); and Holland had to commit twice as many fouls to deal with them. In other words they really tried to the best of their ability to make the most of their chance to progress.
That's what you want from your team in the World Cup and, if they lose, at least you know they've tried their best. And Wales? What a shocking and shameful contrast. Quoting from an article I read in a newspaper, Wales were described as being the second worst team after Qatar and that they "stank the place out". Well done, Mr Page, Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey et al. What a bunch of over-privileged, self-entitled, useless individuals 'represented' us on what turned out to be nothing more than a Jolly Boy's outing for them. Taking part in one of the world's greatest competitions obviously wasn't enough to stir them into some sort of action and they should be thoroughly ashamed. But I doubt they will be. Modern day footballers are nothing more than selfish, self-obsessed money grabbers and they haven't got a fucking clue about pride in performance. Certainly our lot more than fit that description and none of them are fit to even lick the boots of our 1958 squad.
