Corona virus

Southampton, UK-based Synairgen has announced positive results from a clinical trial of SNG001, its wholly-owned inhaled formulation of interferon beta, in hospitalised COVID-19 patients.

The risk of developing severe disease (requiring ventilation or resulting in death) during the treatment period (day one to day 16) was significantly cut by 79% for patients receiving SNG001 compared to patients who received placebo.

Data also showed that patients who received SNG001 were more than twice as likely to recover (defined as ‘no limitation of activities’ or ‘no clinical or virological evidence of infection’) over the course of the treatment period compared to those receiving placebo, while the measure of breathlessness was “markedly reduced” in patients who received the drug compared to those in the control arm.

Also of note, in patients with more severe disease at time of admission, SNG001 treatment increased the likelihood of hospital discharge during the study, although the difference was not statistically significant, at six days versus nine days for those receiving placebo.

Furthermore, patients receiving SNG001 appeared to be more than twice as likely to have recovered by the end of the treatment period, 'although this strong trend did not reach statistical significance,' the firm said. However, by day 28, patients receiving SNG001 had statistically significantly better odds of recovery.

On the safety side, it was noted that three subjects (6%) died after being randomised to placebo, but there were no deaths among those given SNG001.

"The results confirm our belief that interferon beta, a widely known drug that, by injection, has been approved for use in a number of other indications, has huge potential as an inhaled drug to be able to restore the lung’s immune response, enhancing protection, accelerating recovery and countering the impact of SARS-CoV-2 virus,” Professor Tom Wilkinson, Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Southampton and trial chief investigator.

“Recognising that SARS-CoV-2 is known to have evolved to evade the initial antiviral response of the lung, our inhaled treatment of giving high local concentrations of interferon beta, a naturally occurring antiviral protein, restores the lung’s ability to neutralise the virus, or any mutation of the virus or co-infection with another respiratory virus such as influenza or RSV, as could be encountered in the winter if there is a resurgence of COVID-19,” added Professor Stephen Holgate CBE, Medical Research Council Clinical Professor of Immunopharmacology at the University of Southampton and Co-Founder of Synairgen.

This is a great news.

"Researchers have identified a potent cocktail of antibodies that may help doctors treat Covid-19 infections and protect people at risk from falling ill with the disease.
The antibodies were collected from patients hospitalised with severe Covid-19, and they could be manufactured at scale by pharmaceutical firms and transfused into the blood to fight the virus or prevent it from taking hold.

Scientists at Columbia University in New York screened antibodies from 40 Covid-19 patients and identified 61 types from five individuals that effectively wiped out coronavirus. Among them were nine that displayed “exquisite potency” for neutralising the pathogen.
Tests on cells showed that the antibodies killed off the virus, while experiments with hamsters revealed that an infusion of one of the more potent antibodies protected the animals from disease. “It shut off infectious virus completely in the lung tissue of the hamsters we treated,” said David Ho, a professor of medicine at Columbia who led the research.
“We specifically isolated very potent antibodies that can be mass produced and then administered,” Ho said. “We would assume that these could be used to prevent or treat Sars-Cov-2. We’d be looking to treat early in the course of infection, particularly those at risk of developing severe disease such as the elderly and those with underlying illness.”
He added: “In terms of prevention, these could certainly substitute for vaccines, and again we’d be looking at the most vulnerable, for example, nursing home residents.”

Professor Sachdev Sidhu at the University of Toronto also has plans to take neutralising antibodies into clinical trials later this year.
“In my opinion, the more antibodies the better, as scaling up antibodies, although standard, still requires time,” he said. “Having multiple options will be good to ensure as many patients as possible can receive the therapies.”
He said every country that is capable of doing so “owes it to their population” to manufacture therapeutic antibodies, and that countries should work together to ensure they can be made available to as many patients as possible at affordable cost.
Efforts are under way to develop vaccines for coronavirus, but there is uncertainty over how effective any vaccine will be and how long the protection it confers could last. Immune responses tend to be weaker in older people, so even if vaccines become available in the coming year, infusions of lab-grown antibodies that protect for months at a time would still be valuable.

My glasses fog up with normal masks...
Let me know if these work, if they do send me a link so I can buy some!
Apologies, Bos, went right out of my mind. Been using mine for a little while now and found that there's an occasional problem with fogging but nothing too bad at all. The Ebay number of the item is 164209290449 and there's a choice of colours. You could also just go to 'Face Masks' and take a look at what's on offer. You might find something better or more suitable.

BBC New Headlines this morning, Brazil has overtaken us in the Corona death rate. What a load of bollocks. Just another of Boris's bullshit statements in an attempt to throw us off the true facts, that we have the highest death rate in the world on a death to population ratio.
Brazil population 210M Death rate 435 per 1M
U.K. population 66M Death rate 679 per 1M
This Government needs to be totally ashamed of itself for the thousands of deaths its caused by total inadequacy from day one.
Up until a few weeks back we were allowing 1,500 unchecked passengers a day through our airports.
Just one week ago Boris in his infinite wisdom has now decided we should now wear masks in shops.
We are an island, meaning no land borders to contend with, just airports and ferry terminals.
Germany for instance has nine land borders to contend with apart from its airports and to a lesser degree ferry terminals but has a death rate that is over 5 times less than ours. In the event of a second wave one shudders to think what our action will be.

One important thing the UK is doing right is testing. The UK is among the countries who test most per capita.

Testing is crucial to understanding the spread of the pandemic and responding appropriately.

Yes, they have tested their vaccine massively on the Russian Army soldiers. Health and care workers are next to be vaccinated there. Let's see how it goes.

"They think it's all over" but, unlike 1966, it's NOT. Never mind Manchester, I see people locally totally ignoring the basic rules of social distancing every time I go out - particularly in shops where they stand face to face gossiping. Whenever I go shopping I wear a mask and always use the cleansers provided by the retailer to clean the trolley etc and I have very little contact with people otherwise.

As it happens, I had to visit LadyGG the other day when I was greeted, at a distance, by the words "air hugs". Then we sat well apart outside on the decking of her house. My daughter will be coming to stay for a few days shortly but we both have been being as sensible as possible and will be even more so during her visit. As for parties or any communal gatherings, forget it!!

We do need to ease the lockdown but ONLY if people behave in a responsible manner. Seems that's far too much to ask of most. TWATS!!

Recently received a flyer through my letterbox from a small local cafe which is part of the 50% discount scheme. I had to go to the shops, so I skipped breakfast and had brunch instead; an all day breakfast at Caffi y Cwtsh. Am I glad I did!

I had the extra large breakfast and it was all I could eat!! You could choose up to 10 items (somehow I had 11) and I had 2 very large sausages, 2 x back bacon, 2 x black pudding, baked beans, plum tomatoes, LOADS of mushrooms, fried egg and a plateful of fried potatoes. It came with a slice of toast with proper butter and a large mug of tea all for £7.25 discounted to £3.63 :). Some people will pay that for a coffee at Costa or Starbucks .

I have a KFC and a MaccyD quite close by but it gave me a lot of pleasure to support a small local business. Customers were properly distanced and the place was squeaky clean with every table and chair being thoroughly sanitised in between service. I might add that the food was FRESHLY cooked and not reheated or served from a warming station. They have an extensive menu for a small place and I can see me eating there every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday until the scheme ends: I will certainly be taking my daughter when she visits. The owner is a lovely lady with two very pleasant waitresses and I was provided with foil to wrap some titbits that I wanted to take home for Hector, as he had missed out on his habitual scrounge when I eat at home. He's happily munching some black pudding as I type. :D Pleased to leave a good tip for a cracking meal and equally good service.

Scientists are saying that our governments testing and tracing is not good enough, irrespective of Johnsons claim that we are world leaders in this field.
