One observation from tonight - You know that "invisible forcefield" effect you get from trying to push two magnets of the same polarity together? Watching Swansea's players defend opponents one-on-one is the same thing. It's like they're physically unable to get close. 3 feet of space at all times for absolutely no good reason.
Sakamoto is clearly a dangerous player and he was allowed to pick out five good crosses tonight. He was unlucky more didn't come of it. I have no idea what the thinking is behind this kind of slack, passive stance. It seems only to provide time and space for the opposition with zero benefit to Swansea.
I wonder how much of this is lack of confidence, which was tangible again tonight. Lacking the confidence to close, in case they get beaten. Most of the team had the look of vegetarian schoolkids on a field trip at an abattoir. Weak, haunted, flapping in the wind. No guts (no glory). Even Rushworth is starting to wane. Those mistakes of his in recent games. There were one or two times again tonight he flapped a little and almost lost it.
These guys need a coach to bring them in from the cold, make them relaxed, make them laugh, give them some hot soup. Tell them the nightmare is over. And then remind them that they are good footballers and make them act like it. Restore the self-respect. Get some filth and fury back under the skin.
Show them how journeymen like Luke Moore and Kemy Agustien played in that 3-1 win over WBA under Laudrup, and that if the likes of Moore and Agustien can raise their game to that level, then this lot can beast most of the Championship.
It's just belief. That and having one of the finest footballing minds ever to grace the game as manager, but mostly belief.
