Humble pie from me because I ended up disappointed that we didn't win. And yes, we showed the desire, the fitness and the character to almost win this and we should have. As soon as Fer went off and Little Miss Muffet tripped on, I feared the worst. He wasn't directly responsible for the goal but gaps started to appear where Fer wasn't if you get my drift.
Couple of things and I'm not carping, it's just that you don't improve if issues aren't addressed. Potter should have told Mckay to test the young lad and keep testing him. Not only did that not happen but the lad had the freedom to run at Olssen and set up their first goal. Should NEVER have happened. I love Pablo to bits but why wasn't he introduced to some repeated crunching tackles? We all know he's not keen on them and will destroy you if given the space. We didn't do it, he got his space and cost us 2 points. Potter has to be more cynical with his team briefing. Good football is great, and I enjoyed watching it tonight, but other teams target our danger men and we MUST do the same in this league.
Then there are some basics that need looking at. Someone please teach Connor Roberts to use his left foot and, if we have to play him, Carroll needs to learn to use his right foot. And, for pity's sake, that naive finish by Celina was terrible. Everyone knows that you dink or chip the keeper in that situation and he has the skill to do it. But he didn't and we failed to win the game because of it.
As for the players, Olsson was good (great cross for Oli's goal) and poor in equal measure. Mckay was too quiet for a player of his ability and we need more from him. Celina had a good game as did our other defenders and I thought that Fer really made a difference for us. He'll only get better with games and could be a big player for us at this level. Oli deserved his MOM for his two goals and non-stop effort. He'll never win any prizes for elegance or style but he's an honest, whole-hearted player who'll get us goals if he's used properly.
In general, the lads did as I asked and proved me wrong, so WELL DONE to them for that. They put in a great display that on another night would have got them the win they deserved. If they can build on this and keep improving, we might actually have a decent shout at a play off place - particularly with some decent loanees on board and a resurgent Bony steam-rollering opposing defences. COYS!!!!!!!!!!
