Swans v Barnsley

Once again we return to the oasis ... Barnsley is first up. Mired in the bottom three, on paper we should win this, on the field this couldn't be farther from the truth as Stoke so easily demonstrated.

The questions are:
  1. Which Swans team will show up - the one with tempo and desire, or the one where players in key roles go invisible and others struggle to close the gap?
  2. Has Cooper got is tactical and selection shit together?
  3. Will we yet again see the same non-creative, disjoint forward lines?
  4. How well has Barnsley gone to school on Stoke's methods and can they replicate ... they've had two weeks of full squad preparation?
In comparison to Barnsley, we've had players flying here, there and everywhere to play in international matches that for the most part are a total distraction and quite inconsequential. Cooper has not been able to drill his full squad but bits and pieces, and the first order of business is an inventory of fitness of those that return before a ball can be kicked in a full squad practice.

I am hoping that we will see a purposeful forward line with experienced wingers that know how to play (Routs and Dyer); that Dhanda gets to watch and learn from the bench or the stands instead of on the field in the #10 role for which he is not yet ready; that Celina is either used in his best position as #10 or not at all; and that Ayew gets to think about which part of the phrase "playing wide on the wing" he doesn't understand. Whether Ayew or Borja starts as #9 is immaterial; they are both more than capable of doing the job.

Over the last few games we have expected our full backs to carry a greater defensive burden with the players in front of them - Ayew and Celina - not really having much of a defensive clue or desire. We got burned badly with this missing piece of the puzzle. This is exhausting for our FBs as Roberts demonstrated in the second half against Stoke (courtesy of @CroJack and his passing map) - either that or Stoke devised a masterful tactical plan at half time. This is the piece that Dyer and Routs know like the back of their hands and having been key participants in triangles, give-n-goes down the wing, and the skinning of countless FBs over countless seasons know how, at this level, to deliver disruption and destruction to the opposition. Hoping that Celina and Ayew find some sporadic piece of magic is like hoping for a fart to overcome thunder ... I'm getting tired of waiting ... a game is not a few sporadic moments but 90+ minutes and we spend far too much time not applying lethal pressure to the opposition or making passes that never have a prayer of working out instead of whipping in crosses to offer our #9 etc a chance to attack or working the other team's CBs into fatigue and mistakes.

Playing like we did in the Prem, when we dropped, is not a recipe for promotion and that's what we have been drifting into. It has to end against Barnsley.

It's time for Cooper to start showing us that he's got a modicum of tactical and team formation nous. So far he's got by on a wing and a prayer but, despite our lofty position, I've not been overly impressed with what I've been seeing. I get the feeling that what we have is built on sand and can come crashing down unless Cooper gets to grips with the problems that we all can see but apparently he can't.

He has the tools but it appears to me that he uses a saw when it's blindingly obvious that a hammer is required. I don't think that anyone on here is satisfied with our general play and there seems to be very little progress being made in the overall patterns of our play. Barnsley should be a nailed on 3 pointer but can any of us have any confidence that it will be? I certainly have none. For sure we have the players and the capability to win well, providing Cooper makes the best use of the tools he has at his disposal. But I'm not holding my breath.

Seems that Barnsley have a lot of kids in their team and that their caretaker manager has had them on double training. We don't like fit teams that keep coming at us but surely we've got enough to win this? Their recent record is abysmal and they are managerless; just the sort of optimum conditions for us to fuck up as we usually do in these type of situations. The Barnsley take on the game.

What Swansea City can expect at Barnsley

Is Fulton injured? He's been one of our most solid players. In comparison Carroll is physically weak. Peterson appears ahead of Dyer.

And yet again ... we persist with incoherence up front ... Ayew and Celina in positions that they fight against playing properly and shirk defensive duties.

Why has Surridge been given the nod over Borja. Is this deserved?

Agreed, my only ray of light right now is that we play much better away from home.

This is utter crap so far. We could easily be 3-0 down. The more time Cooper spends with this squad the weaker it seems to get. We were supposed to be working on possession over the break ... missing is the part where we need to win possession first.

Two defeats to the two bottom teams? Sounds about right. Wheels starting to fall off.
