So does Darling:

1. Score a header
2. Make a huge defensive mistake leading to a goal against

Because he's going to do one or the other

Bristol are tight and organized. We have no clue and still not crossing the ball with purpose or creating anything resembling a threat

This was the last chance of the “old squad” to prove themselves and despite hints and teases of what they could do if they applied themselves and a well taken goal, Bristol could have hammered us with a little more luck. This lot are just not up to it.

does Duff have the nous to rumble through the box of logo bricks and build something resembling a football team, with a plan and purpose.

We desperately need Pedersen and Humphreys in a back four. Defenders with pace and accurate passing, not these lumbering, mistake prone centre backs like Cabango and Darling.
Wood is not any better. Why on earth did we not sell him for £8 million? We'll never get an offer like that again.

Right, the pleasant bit first and it was way better than pleasant as I had a fantastic time courtesy of the equally fantastic @Ladygargar who hosted me at the game. As it was an early kickoff we were offered breakfast as opposed to the usual lunch and I had the Continental starter comprising cold meat slices. cheese, olives, peppers and pickles. I followed this with a full brekky of a whole Cumberland sausage ring, maple cured small gammon steak, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, whole tomato, hash brown, baked beans and granary bread with lots of butter.

There was already a large glass of diet Coke on the table when we sat and we had a glass of orange juice with the meal. At half and full time we had those lovely cheese and bacon puff pastry concoctions (I ate one and took two home for supper!) Included in the package were drinks until 15 minutes before the game; wine, beer, spirits and soft drinks plus there was tea and coffee available all day. Most convenient for me with my knackered legs was that the car was parked in the stadium car park, which involved just a minutes walk to the entrance.

Whilst we ate, former Swan, Welsh International and now radio commentator, Ian Walsh, said a few words on the small stage and when I slipped off for a crafty ciggy downstairs, I passed Lee Trundle and had a quick exchange of pleasantries with him. Nice. All in all, despite the result, I had a fabulous time and extend my wholehearted thanks to LadyGG who laid this on because I'm still grieving badly for my Hector and she knew it would help take my mind off him for a few hours. I'm so grateful for the thought but it didn't end there. Posters will know that I've praised her cooking often and, when we went to her home to collect my car, she gave me three large containers each containing a frozen beef dinner for me to take with me along with some eggs from her chickens. She truly is a great friend and I can't thank her enough.

Now the game. Not much to say other than we were crap. Bristol, by far the better team, outplayed us and could have scored 6 or 7. The mutterings in the lounge at half time were not good to hear and the consensus was that we could easily have gone in 1-4 down. We were terrible. We had no shape, no pace, no game plan that I could see and, in short, we played like a team destined for the drop. I'm not being a doomsday merchant, just expressing my honest opinion of what I saw. And, believe me, I was not alone with this opinion as I've already said. Not one person I spoke to had a good word to say about that performance and it'll be interesting to hear how Duff tries to justify it.

His tactics sucked; his substitutions were a puzzle to everyone and our only hope is that the new signings will make a difference. If they watched that farce today they must be wondering what they've done in joining us. I accept that Cullen didn't have his best day but he's continually being used the wrong way. He doesn't hold the ball up; he doesn't have pace, so he HAS to be used in the box to get on the end of whatever happens in there.

We needed a goal/s and Duff subs off our best chance. Towards the end, when Cullen wasn't there, we started getting crosses in. No one else remotely has his instinct for goals but we just don't play to his strengths. As for Duff, I think he's on borrowed time and a defeat by Cardiff might see him well on his way to getting the Spanish Archer.

@ivoralljack ... glad you had a great day out despite the quality of the football.

Thx to some tidy transfer business we may not have to suffer Duff if he becomes a total duff-er. We can buy out his contract and send him on his way. I thought the Patino / Cullen combo for our goal was clinically done and plenty of energy by Oli Cooper and Ginnelly was positive when he came on. But, we had nothing of any shape nor value in midfield and every time they got the ball they looked purposeful and dangerous.

I'm optimistic that Lowe will be combined with Ginnelly and Cullen up front in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 combo. But, Duff has to see and believe in it to do it. I'm also hoping that the defenders we acquired have the tools to do the job. Note that Darling was dropped to the bench today in favor of Naughton as a CB ... that's got to say something.
