Poor defending, poor goalkeeping or something else? Every conceded goal analysed.

I guess you could be posting from now until the start of next season, CJ, about our defensive mistakes. What worries me is that, whilst the rest of the team has shown a marked improvement in most areas, our defensive frailty has shown no signs of improving with basic mistakes taking place almost every game. So I ask again, who the hell is in charge of defensive coaching? Whoever it is and whatever he's doing, it ain't working!!!
I am doing this because I am curious. Stats can't show you what a proper situational analysis can.

Doing a grand job. Bit I can tell you this ...
Our defence are shit. The biggest problem is full backs tracking back but not tackling or stopping a cross. No one on the posts for corners. Zonal defending corners. 11 men back for free kicks and corners. Just puts pressure on .

Goal No. 11

Swansea 3 : 1 Blackburn

Luckily for us this goal didn't cost us points.

Blackburn are attacking on the left flank:

1.png

I have to praise Naughton here for his awareness. He is caught high up the pitch but makes a great defensive run:

A clever played ball behind our defence and a clever run by the Blackburn player:

Unfortunatelly for us, Naughton gives a penalty away:

Conclusion: a bit unlucky goal, I wouldn't blame Naughton too much here. This can happen to anyone.

Goal No. 12

Rotherham 2 : 1 Swansea

We are one goal up when this happens:

1.png

A high cross to far post should be easily collected by our goalkeeper (Nordfeldt). Initially, Nordfeldt makes a move forward and then suddenly stops:

2.png

The ball bounces and Nordfeldt (comically) fails to catch it:

In his second attempt Nordfeldt fails to either catch the ball or punch it away:

Nordfeldt panics and fouls Rotherham player by holding him down with both hands. A stupid penalty is awarded to Rotherham:

Rotherham have a free kick close to our penalty box:

1.png

A low cross follows into the area just in front of our penalty box:

2.png

And a shot which is not hitting the target (look at Fer who doesn't have his arms in an unnatural position):

3.png

Fer instictively tries to protect his head and the referee blows for the handball:

4.png

Another excellent penalty kick and we are 2:1 down:

Screenshot 2019-05-11 at 22.12.09.png

Conclusion: poor goalkeeping and poor refereeing. 3 points lost.

Goal No. 14

Swansea 1 : 4 Norwich

Scroll to 01:58 to watch the goal:

Norwich wins the ball in the middle of the pitch and what follows is a through ball to a Norwich player who makes the run between two of our defenders:

Screenshot 2019-05-11 at 22.20.13.png
Screenshot 2019-05-11 at 22.20.37.png

Our defender fails to block the low cross and Mike scores an own goal:

Screenshot 2019-05-11 at 22.20.59.png

Screenshot 2019-05-11 at 22.21.11.png

Conclusion: We can't blame Mike for the own goal. He tried to clear the ball and such things happen. Initially it was poor defending, the Norwich player who made that run through the channel was not properly marked.

Excellent analysis as always. One critique .... using the word “poor” to describe Nordfeldt is an insult to poor keepers everywhere. I’m a poor keeper ... actually not a keeper at all, despite having to assume the role for an entire game on a few occasions ... but I couldn’t see me pulling a stunt like that. I don’t know what Nordfeldt thought he was trying to do in the Rotherham example, I don’t think he knows or could in anyway explain it. There is no excuse for it at this level and there is no reason for it.

Unlike days gone by, you breath on a keeper trying to play the ball today and a foul is given. A keeper doesn’t have to actually play the ball, just make a good faith effort and get touched in the process .... but there has to be a good faith effort. Good Faith and Effort are not a part of Nordy’s tool box.

Agreed. He is terrible when it comes to crosses.
It goes beyond crosses. It's anytime he may have to make contact with another player. He is literally averse to contact. I've never seen anything like it. How do you make it to this level with that as an attribute, it's not something that you can finesse away.

We used to make fun of Dorus, referring him to as a vampire because he hated crosses. But, Nordy makes Dorus look like Pat Jennings. There was a video posted a little while back of the Forest playoff match at the Liberty in 2011. In the last few minutes Dorus came way out of his goal to get on the end of a cross ... not sure if it led to Pratley's goal. Never in a million years would I bet your last penny on Nordy doing anything like that.

This is the second goal we conceded against Norwich. The goal can be described as a stupidity by Mulder.

We are, as always, trying to play from the back and that's not the problem in this situation. Mulder simply makes a bad choice. Instead of passing the ball to Van der Hoorn or For, he chooses Celina who is under pressure. Two Norwich players are pressing him. Celina also makes a wrong decision here and instead of passing the ball either to Mike or Fer, he tries to dribble past the Norwich men. He gets easily dispossessed and they score.

Goal No. 18

Swansea 1 : 2 WBA

The first WBA goal.

You can watch the goal here, scroll to 4:20:

We are one goal up and a minute later we give a corner-kick away. As you can see we use a combination of zonal and man-marking defending. Not too bad, but one WBA player (red arrow) is totally unmarked and is in a dangerous position on the edge of the penalty box:

Screenshot 2019-05-24 at 21.28.38.png

One of the WBA players makes a late run into the box and players 1 & 2 are totally unaware of his movement:

Screenshot 2019-05-24 at 21.44.30.png

A good header:

Screenshot 2019-05-24 at 21.51.08.png

And the goal:

Screenshot 2019-05-24 at 21.52.51.png

I still think our goalkeeper should have done better. He had enough time to make two steps backwards and make a save.

Conclusion: bad defending and bad goalkeeping.

Another corner and again a combination of zonal and man-marking defending Our back line defends zonally and players 1, 2, 3 & 4 man-mark:

Both Roberts and Carter-Vickers lose their men who then make runs to the far post:

Two Norwich players block our goalkeeper who can't make any steps backwards. Smart.

Screenshot 2019-05-24 at 22.16.50.png

An easy goal:

Conclusion: Perfectly executed set-piece.
