Yates definitely won't be the starting striker next season since he's now suspended (not that he would have been)
Took him 9 minutes to get sent-off. It's nothing personal, but there would be a kind of poetry to it if that turns out to be the last thing he does for Swansea.
Echoing what others have said, Williams' selections were inexcusable today. Patino, Humphries, Lowe all taking places Swansea's own players should have been given.
Abdulai looks like a really decent player, there's no reason he shouldn't have started.
Walsh should have been given a whole game if he's under the microscope for a contract.
Govea could have come off the bench, Lissah could have started.
I wish, again in vain, that Big Myk could have started or seen any action at all because this team needs to sort a goalscorer out.
Cullen is not it, at least not in a single-striker system. He doesn't have the physicality - pace, power, strength or height - to carry that load. He'd be an effective poacher in a two-striker system but he was easily controlled by Millwall's big defenders today. I don't care about his work ethic. A work ethic is valuable, but it's a secondary requirement for a striker, and ultimately a striker who doesn't score isn't a striker. Maybe he can develop as a #10 since his link-up play is decent.
Whoever plays up front next season needs to be a leader. This team is slow enough as it is, but what tends to happen is the wide players get the ball and look up and see one or two guys jogging slowly to the edge of the box. So the wide players hold the ball up, the defence covers, and the momentum is gone.
Either the wingers or the 9 needs to force the pace. If the wingers burst quickly to the byline and start whipping balls in, the 9 will have to move faster into the box to capitalise. Or if the 9 bursts quickly into the box instead of jogging, then the wingers will realise they'd better get the ball in quick. As a poacher, Cullen isn't used to being that visible. He'd rather sneak around the periphery and pop up with a one-touch finish somewhere. He can't play that game in this system.
So there's a vacuum of assertiveness. It feels like everyone is waiting for someone else to take the lead. Swansea play offence like a bored couple making dinner plans ("what do you want to eat? / Dunno. You? / Dunno..."). Someone needs to take the attack by the scruff of the neck and force everyone to be decisive.
For me, that should be the 9. The wingers mostly play a supporting role so it makes sense for the one they are supporting to set the pace. A team needs a figurehead that will force himself into the right place and demand the ball. A good #9 needs to be a bully, even to his own teammates, and Swansea are a team of nice guys.
And to cap it all off today, Grimes misses a penalty for the first time ever. Sums up this season eh?
