Liam will be back on the bench for the next game and the game after and the game after....... Oh, well, as the saying goes, "you can't educate pork." And let's not forget, we still haven't won in SEVEN games so maybe Martin might relent and give him a chance. Some stats:

POSSESSION: 30-70 SHOTS: 17-17 OT: 9-7 CORNERS: 5-3 FOULS: 11-12 GOALS: 3-3

Look at the shots. What are Martin's analysts doing? Isn't someone telling him that they had the same number as us despite having had way less than half of the ball? It shows that our laboured snail-paced style of play, our pointless passing for the sake of it, does nothing other than boost our possession stats. It does NOT, repeat NOT, result in creating more shots at goal (or goals) than other more direct ways of playing. I'm not suggesting hoof ball, far from it, but we rarely seem to use one pass, or through ball, to create a dangerous situation when six or more will do. All it does is allow opposing defences to get organised and snuff out our attack.

The whole world, especially rival teams, have known for some time that they can allow us to faff about in defence and midfield before we make a mistake or lose the ball allowing them to counter when we are completely out of shape. I despair, I honestly do. This is so BASIC I'm at a complete loss to understand why we still do it!!! Maybe Russell's own staff are too reticent to tell him what he's doing wrong BUT there are the likes of Trunds, Curt, Leon and KOL who can surely have a discreet word. After all, they do have far more experience than he does or any of his assistant coaches.

Martin finally admits we have an abysmal approach in the final third. Martin hammered the forward line basically on mentality, which was Pato, Piroe, Ntcham. Does it really take a rocket scientist to look at that trio and, based on history and track record, expect anything more than he got. Martin loves what he sees in training, but training is not a match. Training is not bleeding with the full aggression of the opposition coming to bare. Shrinking violets always look pretty in practice. It’s fucking annoying that he can’t connect those dots when the dots have been there all season.

Martin then goes on to talk about structure … basically playing in position and not willing to take players on, to take a risk. And here’s the irony: flex comes on, he’s put to play RWB🤦🏻‍♂️. We score a goal setup by Flex when he says fuck it to structure and roams from RWB to inside left, makes a move, takes a shot, saved by keeper for Fulton to brilliantly put in the rebound. Flex ignored structure and went walk about. Flex went from his weaker side, weaker position, to his strong side, stronger position … look at the result. Why is this so hard to recognize.

Martin is pissed at a lack of mentality when he picked the team, and he has proven mentality but he starts it on the bench. It is like Henry Cooper trying to fight with his jabbing hand tied behind his back. Who does this. He doesn’t have to work from memory like say Roy Bentley had to, Martin has copious amounts of video and GPS tracking to inform him and yet he picks teams like he’s blind.

“Brilliant” practices are wonderful. But they are not matches. What players do in a match has to trump, has to carry more weight than what happens on the practice field …. When it comes to mentality. Please … pick the players that perform and park the pets.

Martin is fixated on the wrong numbers (possession over shots and chances). I'd bet he's just as fixated on the wrong metrics from the practice sessions. Sometimes you just need to throw the figures out the window and trust your eyes.
