Blackburn Rovers

So will we end our abysmal run against in-form high-flying Rovers who are hell bent on promotion this year? All logic and common sense says no but Swans rarely do what we expect do they? We are both in desperate need of the points for vastly different reasons and this is another in a tough run of games for us.

At our best we can beat them but their manager Tony Mowbray has said exactly what we've all been saying that we have to turn our high rate of possession into goals. He maintains that his team were like us last season; lots of possession but nowhere enough goals resulting from it, so he reckons he tweaked things this season and now they're pushing hard towards the top of the table.

So what did he do? I haven't got a clue because obviously I haven't been watching them enough to form an opinion. I would assume from what he says that maybe they've sacrificed some of the ball to go more direct more often in order to score the goals that win matches. He's managed to strike a balance between the two ways of playing and it's evident that it's worked. But would it work for us?

Thing is, there's far more goals in his team than ours but, fortunately for us, it seems that top scorer Gallagher will miss this game. As for our strikers, Piroe has gone off the boil (maybe because he's missed Pato) and Obafemi has yet to show us that he's anything like clinical enough to regularly get on the scoresheet. True there's been plenty of glimpses but we need him to start delivering and tomorrow would be a good time to start.

We have been creating some decent chances but we've been missing them. We need to cross the ball more but crosses without bodies in the box to get on the end of them are just a waste of time and energy. Our midfielders almost suffer a nosebleed when they get in the final third but they have to start contributing a damn sight more than they have been in terms of creating chances and actually scoring goals.

My prediction? We could win this, maybe 2-1, but that comes from the heart more than the head. However, I understand that Blackburn will be missing a few regulars and that might give us a chance. COYS, make us proud for a change!!

At this point, I think we've lost our way. Martin's Madness has recently dissolved or morphed (if we want to be polite) into something different from a few weeks ago. New toys have prompted a different way of play. Naughton's injury has prompted a new line-up at the back. Laird's departure etc all are shining the light of truth on Martin's Madness ... it's too rigid and impractical, it requires a certain set of players, in certain slots to play a certain way. The impracticality comes in when, in the natural course of events, players are moved out, injured or suspended. What then? The system, or at least this system, Martin's Madness has to change?

Did this ever happen with Martinez, Sousa, Rogers, Laudrup ... No. They played round pegs in round holes and leveraged the natural abilities of the player and the mix of players involved ... and within their system it all worked ... slightly stronger or weaker here or there as different players were used, but it never needed a drastic switch.

Martin has obviously decided to get rid of one at the back experiment. Against Luton we played 4 at the back and I was pleased to see Bennett and Cabango playing close to each other and actually defending. We lost the game but I saw some really positive signs.

1. Improved defence

2. Quick transitions/counter-attacking

3. More forward passing. We didn't play boring passing football.

4. More crosses (22)

5. More bodies in the opposition box

6. Wolf and Ntcham pushing forward

7. Obafemi didn't score but he is getting better and better. I love his runs in the opposition box, and it's just a matter of time before he starts scoring

8. Wolf is getting better and better as well. And he's got pace.

9. Wolf and Christie attacking the Luton box and taking on Luton's defenders

Here are some of the examples where we committed bodies up front.

I am more optimistic than I have ever been this season, but only if we don't go back to the old habits and the old formation.

Looks like a decent lineup to me, although I guess it won't necessarily click immediately. But it shows attacking intent and that's what we've all been asking for. Let's hope he sticks with it in future even if it takes time to gel.

We’ve often thought that some managers picked a team by pulling numbers out of a hat … but that was all tongue in cheek.

either the Club is badly hit by Covid (Bennet is nowhere) or Martin’s Madness is no longer just a label, it’s actually setting in

This is close to the lineup I wanted to see, Fulton instead of Obafemi. He can adjust on Tuesday at Stoke.

One thing for sure, this is going be a game we have to play on the front foot. We have to press high and dare not let Blackburn get into our defensive third or we are going to be in big trouble
