SWANS V MAD HATTERS

Amen ... score belies the Luton performance and our inability to generate more threat than we did. We have a chronic reluctance to cross the ball.

Personally I think Smith is to blame for our lack of control of the game. Fulton would have put himself about a bit. I am yet to be convinced by Smith, Palmer had an influence when he came on, Smith is not a presence in midfield.

I take encouragement from the following elements of yesterday’s game:
  • Cullen put in a solid performance and showed that he can turn his weakness into a strength
  • Dhanda was always looking to drive forward and was a real threat
  • the triplet of Ayew, Cullen and Dhanda have to be given time to work out their patterns as they showed, especially early on, that they can be a potent combination.
  • wing back scores again
  • We don’t need Bennett on the field
We need to learn how to cross and what spaces to target with our crosses ... we tend to faff around too much around the the side of the box and prioritize recycle before crossing so losing an opportunity.

I think he was excellent at controlling the game, and, unfortunatelly, one of the few who was trying to control the game.

94% passing accuracy (in the first half 95%) is what I call "controlling the game". Accurate passing is something we have been missing under Cooper, and accurate passing was always Swanselona brand. How on earth are we supposed to "control the game" if we are sloppy, give the ball away at every opportunity, and hoof it?

There are basically two key aspects of controlling the game:

1. With the ball ---> keeping possession by passing it accuratelly

2. Off the ball ---> by pressing opposition and being physical (pressing, tackling, closing down, men-marking)

Fulton is better than Smith at nr. 2, but Smith is definitely a better passer than Fulton.

We used to praise Britton and Ki for their passing ability and high passing accuracy.

That may be so but from what I saw he had little effect on the game. I did not set out to study what he was doing just watching to enjoy the game, but he did not seem to be involved.

Fulton is excellent at his one touch passing
He has 72,6 % passing accuracy so far this season. For a midfielder definitely not Swanselona worthy.

Don't get me wrong, I rate Fulton for his heart, fighting spirit and tackles. But fighting spirit and tackles are better when used offensively while pressing high than defensively after we have lost possession as a result of sloppiness.

This season Swansea are 11th in the Championship for passing accuracy. Not acceptable.

Under Rodgers, Laudrup and Potter our centre-backs all had over 90 % passing accuracy. Under Cooper, our centre backs are on 78 %, and 77 %.

Matt Grimes (81%) and Kyle Naughton (80,5 %) are the only players whose passing accuracy is over 80 %. Norwich have 14 players whose passing accuracy is higher than 80 %.

The trouble is that our poor passing accuracy is not the result of difficult passes or clever long balls. It is the result of sloppiness, stupid passes, overhit passes and panic reactions.

And It was Smith who started the whole attack.

Smith was in involved in spasms. After the first 15 minutes he and Grimes lost the plot and Luton regained control. At half time they had dominated possession.

we were under pressure consistently in the second half and clearing the ball without much effect.
