Our lovely, ugly city has been voted the best city in the UK for first time buyers to put down roots. The following factors were used to determine the contenders:

Average house price.
Crime safety.
Traffic index.
Life satisfaction.

Swansea achieved a score of 82/100 followed by Edinburgh with 78.5, Plymouth, Sunderland and Newport with a total of the 30 most populous cities being considered. I'm not surprised. Our fabulous world-famous beaches, open spaces and parks, cultural activities etc etc can't fail to impress. I've had many friends to stay as guests when I lived in the Mayals in the past and, without fail, they were amazed by the city and its environs and I well remember the look on Rainbow's face when she first saw Rhosilli Bay - and that was on a poor misty day!! Mind you, coming from Peckham where she could get a bus every 5 minutes to anywhere in London, she wasn't happy to see that where I now live, the service could be two hours apart to any particular destination.

I reminded her that I had a car, so no need to use buses very often but she can't drive, so that didn't cut much ice with her. I suppose we take what we have for granted all too often and, whilst I loved South Africa and Spain where I've also lived, and France where I visited friends a lot, at the end of the day, Swansea is a pretty cool place to live a life.

We discovered Swansea quite by chance in 1980 on our way back to Yorkshire after holiday in Pembrokeshire . We decided there and then this was the place to solve my midlife crisis.
Now, in those days, I reckon that if we had approached Swansea from the other direction, past BP, the steelworks, the docks and Carbon Black, we would probably have kept on going. 😀

That's what stops many top players from completing a transfer. They come in for the medical. See the "sites" on the eastern approach and flip around.
By contrast, those that frequent Swansea West and the Mumbles and then go on to discover the delights of the Gower peninsula, speak extremely highly of the area. Many ex-players came back here to live or kept a second home here. All places have their eyesores and the Hafod once featured in a tv programme called the "Backside of Britain". That's nothing against the good folk who live there but it's not the prettiest as they might agree.

I used to live in the Mayals in Swansea west, adjacent to Clyne Gardens and Clyne common and golf club where I was a member. The view of Swansea Bay when I drove down Mayals road each morning was so uplifting and beautiful followed by the drive along Mumbles Road into the city. It produced a real feel-good factor.

I live near Cross hands now, which isn't too bad as it's a fast developing area. I'm roughly equidistant from Swansea, Carmarthen and Llanelli with excellent road access to almost anywhere. But one of the great things is the abundance of fast food outlets, pubs and restaurants where I can eat when I don't feel like cooking - either eat in and/or takeaway. Within less than a 5 minute drive there's no less than 17 establishments I can choose from including MaccyD, Burger King, Costa Coffee, Greggs, KFC and Subway along with chippys, kebab shops, Chinese and Indian restaurants, some excellent food pubs/bistros etc etc etc. Totally spoilt for choice and I love my food as you've all probably guessed. :)

Forgot to include a Dominoes Pizza house and there's also fine dining to be had at a couple of gastro pubs. Bit pricey those but great for a special occasion.
