you’ve made me even more depressed that we didn’t continue with Sheehan.
Well, let's see. In his post-match interview after Morecambe game he said some things that are spot on (apart from that stupid "We've had a plenty of shots." FFS, we had 8 shots against a League Two team!!! 🤦‍♂️)

I am glad he is aware that we need to play with more intensity, that we need to attack opposition box more than we do (he calls it "box entries"), that we need to be more accurate with the ball, that we need to be more clinical, that we need to understand positioning better than we do...

He also said that the line-up was Sheehan's call (so there's hope for Liam Cullen yet), and his talk about what's to come is encouraging:

From the BBC:

"It [this week] looks like a lot of hard work," Williams said.

"People will probably feel a bit uncomfortable with certain things because they'll have to get used to something new.

"I'm sure me and the staff will feel uncomfortable as well because we'll need to convince the players.

"I think there were some positive things that I saw from the short amount of time I've had to work with the players.

"Then there's some things I can see they're struggling to implement, the things I was asking for. Not because anyone's not good enough, just because when you're changing a position, which might sound like a small thing, or slightly changing the idea of where you attack or how you defend."

So what we've seen so far is nowhere close to the final product, as should be obvious since Williams has only been in for a couple of days.

On the subject of Cullen, Williams was at Swansea a couple of seasons ago when Cullen was very much established as a potent striker in the unders. He has to remember that version of Cullen. This baffling (and unconvincing) re-invention of Cullen as RW/RM has only come since Duff's time, and Sheehan's continuation of that folly is one of the marks against him. I'm sure Williams can work it out. I'd back Cullen to score 20 goals over a season if he was the regular #9.

Williams has a week before Brum to make things as clear as mud. He can either keep the tune Sheehan had generated - largely blowing out the dust and cob webs from Duffer - and make fine incremental adjustments to the “new” or he’s going to try “new” wholesale right from the start with the confusion and pratt falls that may ensue.

with the return of players from the injury list, there are a lot of new toys to play with. Some can be set aside as cover (e.g. Pedersen, Naughton) and some can immediately start to challenge (e,g Allen, Abdulai), which is going to force hitherto regulars like Fulton and Darling to find a gear or get comfortable on the bench. The #9 role is the biggest conundrum. Williams is going have to figure that out either by using Cullen and developing a style around him, or going bold with Myk, or the recruitment of someone new this month. I thing we can all agree that Yates works exceptionally hard at achieving very little, and was never more invisible than against Morcambe. If we could transfer him out during the January window I would as all he’s doing when he plays for us is depreciating his value.
