As I understood the situation from my 'source' (very reliable) at the time, a quality striker had been lined up for £500k but Jenkins refused the outlay and we missed promotion that season by just one goal: on goals scored if my memory has it right. He had no way, no way at all of knowing that we would go up the following season but he lucked out.
Had he done his calculations properly, the outlay would have been covered, more or less, by the play-off game gate receipts as we would probably have reached the play-offs with a good striker. Had we gone on to lose the Final, the entire cost would have been covered by the tradition of the winning team handing over their share of the Wembley gate, as we did with Reading. Short sighted doesn't begin to describe it!!
