Looks like we have a loan deal lined up to sign Karlan Grant from WBA,
He has a sound record in the championship with West Brom and Huddersfield , a decent bit of competition for an under-performing Piroe .
Loan not confirmed yet but I understand he is currently undertaking a medical with us .

Scored a few goals for West Brom, not a bad signing. But where does this leave Whittaker? There's limited minutes up front, I don't know if Pato is still in the mix.

I don't get this. (Karlan Grant - Player profile 22/23)

We are taking a player from another club (no better than us) who has played 21 league games, scored 3, no assists. Despite paying silly money (£8m) for him in 2020, WBA don't think much of him now otherwise they wouldn't send the 25 year out on loan. Either that or he's developed an attitude problem.

We're expecting this player to have a significant impact. It'll take him the rest of the season to figure out where he's got to stand to take a piss especially under Martin. Why would WBA let him out on loan: no good or attitude problem? And of course we have to take on a reclamation project from another club.

Meanwhile we have last year's flash in the pan taking a hiatus and Whittaker pulled out of a break through season for him in L1. Why waste the money on this guy, when we should be developing Whittaker; especially with Fisher having to go in goal the season is somewhat fucked as it is.

Is this player the pick of the Club or Martin?

The team needs a quality goalie and two pacey centre-backs. That's most important right now.

Grant would have been useful for depth, I don't know where Morgan Whittaker stands as of now. We need him to play this season. Not signing a keeper is very troubling. They must be figuring out a deal for a backup and going with Fisher the rest of the way.

Until Jan, Webb was on loan to Aberystwyth, where he conceded 37 goals in 15 games. He should complement our leaky defense nicely.

Benda had better have a speedy recovery because Fisher has looked even more like a fish out of water.

there are a ton of free agent keepers ….https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spieler/vertragslosespieler/statistik/1/plus//galerie/0?ausrichtung=Torwart&spielerposition_id=alle&land_id=alle&altersklasse=&wettbewerb_id=alle&seit=alle&yt0=Show

Of course keepers tend to be free agents for one main reason

In fairness to keepers, if they have a crap defence in front of them who allow attackers licence to fire in shots all game, they can do little about it. I remember a couple of seasons at Ponty when we had a really shit team and were shipping heavy beatings almost every other game. However, we had a superb keeper in Willie Jones who actually played for Wales amateurs during this period. But for him there would have been several double figure hammerings. which would have been really humiliating.

Willie was 6ft 3" tall in an era of smaller keepers and, as a guide to how good he was, Leicester City offered him professional terms, which his mother refused to let him accept. Mindful to note that at that time Gordon Banks was their first team keeper whilst Peter Shilton was his understudy. They knew their keepers did Leicester in those days and it reflects on Willie's ability that they were busting a gut to sign him.

As an aside, Willie was a happy, carefree, polite and well rounded young man with a huge sense of humour and he was a really good bloke. I'd have loved for him to have had his chance as he thoroughly deserved it. But his mother insisted that he finished his apprenticeship before going into football and Wales lost a keeper who'd have played for them for years. I kid you not, he was that good.

Can’t wait for the prematch interview. No doubt the reporter is going to ask about the transfer window. Martin’s body and verbal language will give it all away

I remember Willie, he returned to Ponty after Lyn Davies - both rock solid keepers. He had a brother Richard (Kimble).
I didn't know that Willie had returned to Ponty - probably well past his best then. Kimble also played for us as a striker. Cheeky, chopsy character he was. I always used to say of him that he was half as good as he thought he was but twice as good as many thought he was. One thing's for sure; he was superb in the air because he had a prodigious leap with a long hang time. Although he was a little shorter than Willie ( but more solid in body) he'd have made a great keeper. I say this because he'd often go between the sticks in training because he enjoyed it.

He was also the team's back-up keeper in the event of injury. I remember a game somewhere in the valleys (Norman Lawson was manager) where Willie was injured, so Kimble took the gloves. Lawson was gob-smacked with his performance and raved about it for weeks afterwards so good had Kimble been in goal. He could easily have been a regular keeper as it came naturally to him.

I said he was chopsy and he was one of the reasons I 'retired'. I was just going through the motions by the time we played together. I trained just to keep a semblance of fitness and only played in the team as a make-weight when we had injuries and suspensions. But Kimble didn't make allowances for that. Every mistake I made drew a comment from him even though we were mates. Others accepted that I was just helping out but he expected me to perform somewhere near my best, which neither he nor Ponty ever saw, because I was way past that when I joined them with Norman Lawson who took me there with him. My best years were in the London leagues.

Kimble eventually joined the police and I believe that Willie did as well. Shame on both of 'em!

When Lyn Davies left Ponty, Willie returned. He and Kimble were both in the police when I knew them. And, Willie was still a dominant and imposing figure in goal. I compared him to Lyn Davies who was a quality keeper in his own right, Welsh unders international while at the Swans.

I arranged for a Spurs scout to watch Willie when he came back 'on the market'. I still have the letter from the club somewhere (I also had several phone conversations) where they agreed that he was a fine keeper with undoubted potential and ability but, by then, they felt he was too old for them. However, they did say they had no doubts about him getting fixed up with a lower league club.

I touted his name to several but because of my own severe business commitments at that particular time I couldn't follow things through for him. Due to this some of my understanding came via third parties and the story was this:

Willie did indeed have a couple of offers (he had now completed his trade, as a carpenter if my memory is correct) but he turned them down. The reason, I was told, was that he had committed himself to working at a disabled childrens' holiday home in Cowbridge where he helped look after the kiddies doing all kinds of distasteful work such as wiping their bums etc. What a man! And so typical of Willie who was that type of guy. I had nothing but respect for him when I heard about that.

But @Yankee_Jack do you remember Rhys who was their grandfather or something? He was a hulking, well built man with a greying walrus moustache, always dressed in a brown 'flashers' raincoat, a brown trilby and horn rimmed glasses. He attended almost every home game and stood with Ducks near the touchline. Well I told you that Kimble was chopsy and, in this particular game against Cardiff Corries, the opposing CB didn't like it one bit and decided to shut Kimble up. His method of choice was to kick Kimble black and blue every time he could and he smashed him several times.

As you know, the Welsh League was very physical and the officials let a lot of stuff go but Rhys was getting more and more incensed by the minute as this CB was virtually using Kimble as a punch bag. Almost every tackle saw Kimble going up in the air or crashing to the ground. Finally Rhys could take no more. After leaving Kimble in a heap yet again, the CB took the ball on a run up the left flank when Rhys barged his way onto the pitch, grabbed the guy around the neck and practically ripped him out of his boots!!! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: I was in stitches laughing. Rhys was getting on in years but he was still a strong man and this CB had the shock of his life.

There was a real scuffle on the touchline with both teams joining in before the referee dismissed Rhys from the touchline. Order was finally restored but for the life of me I can't remember the result. I do remember, though, that Ponty was reported to the FAW and received a fine for failing to control the fans. Bit harsh I thought as it wasn't a case of failing to control the fans, it was a case of failing to control Rhys!!
