Borja loan to Alaves

Saw some rumblings in Spanish transfer mills about Borja heading to Alaves on 12-month loan. I suppose we’re just going to eat his transfer fee (minus whatever nominal loan fees we’ve been getting and whatever of his £45,000 pw wages we’re not paying).

Yet another 'astute' signing by the board and another striker whose ambitions were throttled by our management. Not to mention the huge amount of money it's cost us. Borja was highly rated when he came to us but no one seemed to have the patience to work with him: nor coach the midfield how best to use him with what he offered. That was self evident the few times he did play. You'd swear they'd never set eyes on each other even in training.

At least Jenkins' influence has been diluted and I hope that Potter is better able than his predecessors to utilise the players that are brought in and get everyone playing to each others' strengths. We shall soon find out.

Yeah the best news I've read was that Potter has the final say on transfers and so far the players we've been linked to support that. Countless signings have been made don't fit who our coach was or it seemed the coach didn't even want them. Hopefully Borja can light up this loan move and we can get a little cash back for him.

Greetings, Mljacks, let's hope so. When we bought him there were many in Spain who saw him as their next No 9. Spain certainly need a rebuild so maybe a season in La Liga will give us our first Spanish cap sine the legend that is Michu.

Confirmed officially that Borja has now joined Alaves for the season. Such a shame that we couldn't make more of a player with his potential. Some managers/coaches really do ruin certain players.

It's beginning to concern me that the Swansea curse doesn't seem to apply to strikers. Gomis scores and is never offside, Oliveira gets his name on the scoresheet , the Euro 16 winning goalscorer once (or twice) wore a Swansea shirt.
I wish them all well, Borja too, but at this rate we would be better off taking a striker on loan with option to purchase.

We really need Borja to at worst have an OK season so he has any value next summer. I’m honestly a little surprised we haven’t been linked to Oliveira yet.

Another one nearly gone if today's Sun is to be believed. They report that Sam Clucas will become a Burnley player in the next 48 hours, as the two clubs currently negotiate, for a fee of £12 million. Thoughts?

WOL reckon that the fee for Clucas more likely to be in the region of £8 million. If true, that's too big a hit and he'd be worth keeping at that sort of money. WOL also reckon that Naughton wants out of SA1 quoting about a million quid for him. He's not everyone's cup of tea but he's worth a damned sight more than that!!

Whilst not a new signing, Jefferson Montero is now back at the Liberty. However, if he rediscovers his best form, it would feel like a new signing. If Pots likes him and works with him, a rejuvenated Monty could wreak some havoc in the Championship. Seems he's happy to be back and up for it, so that's a good start.

I hope Pots get our midfield to do the job intended, I think Gomis took a lot of offside stick due to the midfielders being unable to time his runs,( something they've perfected out here) Bony was an easier target as he was almost stagnant in and around the box, a much easier target man to find. With a fit Montero and Bony I feel there are goals to be had, they had a good relationship on the park at one time.

1. I don't want Montero in our starting XI. He is a one trick pony who doesn't score goals. I want goal scoring wingers who are able to do much more than Montero.

2. I have mixed feelings about Clucas. I am not a huge fan of him, but he is an ok midfielder who can run, tackle and score some goals. If we sign Amartey from Leicester then it's ok to sell Clucas, but not for £8 m. If we sell Clucas for £8 m then I was right when I posted this one:

I liked your post for what you wrote about Gomis but not for this part:

"With a fit Montero and Bony I feel there are goals to be had, they had a good relationship on the park at one time."

1. I doubt they will ever again be fit

2. I don't want us to go back to the style of football that destroyed Swanselona.

Saw Bony on the training field on Fb earlier his legs still looked pretty heavy to me; I’m certain he has strength but I’d doubt he’ll ever have too much pace again (not that he was a sprinter before he left us) he used to be much more agile than he looks now or since he’s come back which is inevitable but sad.

Bony is a tank, and if used properly he could be a huge asset in the Championship, especially when opposition park the bus against us. But not only as a lone striker waiting for crosses. I see him more as an anchor who creates spaces for others to attack. Bony has a good techique (he can play one-twos) and a powerful shot.

Agreed. There's more to Bony's game than just being a battering ram. He'll hold up the ball for midfield runners to go past him and, as you say, he has skill enough to play others in on the odd occasion. Defenders will know his past goal scoring record, so they'll know they can't afford to leave him alone in and around the box. In itself this will create space for others to use. Then there's his ability in the air both in offense and defence, which he showed to good effect for us in the past. Me? I'd keep him if we can but then I have no idea of Potter's strategies and he's the only one who knows that. We can only guess but it's fun debating it and trying to second guess what he'll do.
