A trip to the Royals

Paterson did OK as well.
Except towards the end he started faffing about with the ball wide on the left instead of getting it into the box - and he had time to make the cross but chose to wave his arse and lost the ball. And that's one of our big problems. We need to get the ball into dangerous areas quicker before defences are organised. We've got too many players who don't do this. Cullen and Piroe NEED the ball in there quicker. We score when we do this.

I feel it would be unlikely that were facing relegation on the final day but finishing 20th place on the table seems likely now.

There is developing a chronic contradiction. Per Martin, we are a great [paraphrase] team ... blah, blah, blah. The results, points, goal difference paint a completely different story and that's without the more subjective analysis and commentary on performance, per player during a game.

They are not both true. The results etc are the facts. Martin is therefore full of shite.

Norwich today decided that enough was enough with their manager and they are in the playoff area - clearly ambition, quality and results are driving that ship. When our exec speaks (A Christmas update from Julian Winter | Swansea): "We are now at the midway point of the campaign and sit just two points away from the play-off places and, while some might argue we could have more points on the board, I feel it has been a very positive first half of the season" ... there is a tenuous overly generous interpretation of reality.

Norwich and us ... worlds apart in practice and we'll be worlds apart in the table at the end of the season.

Martin is not battling for promotion; he is now fighting to avoid relegation. Players not renewing contracts speak clearly on how things are viewed inside the Club amongst the players.

Martin no longer has the luxury of trying stupid shit such as 2 yard goal kicks from which panic ensues followed by disaster because one of the players fails to grasp the need to put boot through ball and override his practice field indoctrination. Clearly if this short goal kick maneuver is ever practiced Martin doesn't do it with a high press in opposition or our players wouldn't go brain dead when it happens in a match. Nor does Martin have the luxury of starting impact players on the bench (Cundle, Cullen, Flex) and only bringing them on to salvage a match that is going to shit.

We play with wide players, but have no width. A seeming contradiction, but none of the players out wide have a single clue or desire to actually try and beat a defender. Their habit is to check, turn back, pass back. Which makes the whole effort to get a ball out wide pointless. Only Flex offers true width.

Different week, different opponent, same outcome. Insanity and chronic contradiction.

We all know what's wrong and it's probably unanimous on here that Russell Martin is the root cause of our problems. I'm not going to add any more to the huge number of posts outlining what we're doing wrong as I reckon we're all sick and tired by now of repeating them and reading about them. Martinball is NOT working, at least with the players we've got, so I think we'd all deem it a favour if Norwich would take him off our hands. His methods might work with them. They don't with us. Some stats:

POSSESSION: 24-76 SHOTS: 9-12 OT: 4-7 CORNERS: 3-4 FOULS: 24-7 GOALS: 2-1

Look at the foul count. That idiot Linnington let them get away with GBH and denied us a penalty for an identical foul to the one he gave against us. Just my opinion but, in my experience, that man is not fit for purpose and I think he's stealing a living. Respect? You're having a laugh!!

Just a thought ... but ... if the likes of Cundle, Cullen, Flex, Naughton are good enough to salvage a game that's lost ... then shouldn't they be more than good enough to start. 🤷‍♂️
Sounds logical. The problem is, once they’ve got the game safe, they’ll be subbed for those able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
If only Piroe could be as sharp as last season we wouldn’t be on this death slide.

Here's Swansea's Strengths vs Weaknesses according to whoscored.com:

SwanseaSvW.png

Talk about flattering to deceive. Interpreting the subtext:

Creating long shot opportunities = Can't create chances in the box

Coming back from losing positions = Start games with the wrong system and/or the wrong personnel

Attack through the middle = play with no width

Possession football = probably don't shoot enough

Short passes = never stretch the play

Control the game in the oppositions half - wouldn't be so bad if "defending counter attacks" wasn't a recognised weakness

I really do think it's funny when Martin praises his team for their play "between the boxes", when football is a game decided mostly by what happens in the boxes.

Also, what play is he seeing "between the boxes" that's so good? Because all I see are too many slow passes to create good scoring chances and turnovers which lead to chances against.

If your team is good in both boxes, you don't need to worry about what happens in between. You're probably using the midfield for quick transitions one way or the other which is what it should be for, not a museum-pace exhibition of how to pass the ball 10 yards and back again, ad infinitum, before an opponent takes it off you and shows you what you should be doing with it.

Bad news takes a while to get out here in Turkey

Not to worry, it's only just starting to seep into Martin's consciousness. He sounded exceedingly depressed in yesterday's post-match interview. Club should be hiding all sharp objects. He didn't have any blarney to hide is thinking ... he practically admitted he has no idea how to remedy the problems that plague the team. Managers have been fired for far, far less. Martin practically admitted defeat.
