Barca are a clear and classic example of a club that have forgotten their philosophy. They have purchased players that have failed to fit and cannot play the “we own the ball” method at the core of who they are supposed to be. They started with 442 and couldn’t own midfield. Busquettes was like a lost soul. Late on they shifted to 424 and got reamed out. And Messi at 33 is a shadow of himself in a side without shape.
No team at Barca, at any level or age, ever plays anything other than 433/343 or its age appropriate equivalent, not in probably decades, because fundamental to their belief system is that they do, what they do, at the highest level and better than anybody else ... they cannot be emulated ... and 433/343 is a pillar of that belief system. And yet in the most challenging game of the season, against potentially the team of the season, burdened with football geriatrics, they abandon their core principles ... it’s heresy and insanity all rolled into one. The only reason this could happen is that they had fear. Setien had fear. He didn’t believe and so his players didn’t believe. Fear is antithetical to the Barca mentality and philosophy. Fear means a collapse of faith in who they are and what they do.
The best Barca player on the field was Coutinho ... 15 minutes, 2 goals, 2 shots on target, 1 assist. More of everything than most of the Barca team managed in the game, most of the game, and certainly in the second half. This pours insult upon shame.
At this point the club is without vision and soul; it is wandering in the wilderness. It has to be remade from the inside out, from the top down. As a club without owners, this shall happen.
