Ronnie Rees - RIP

Key Player

Very sad to hear this news.

A character in his own right. I have a number of fond funny Ronnie-isms from the time he was at Haverfordwest. And, a four inch scar on my left hip courtesy of Ronnie when we butted heads for 30 minutes during a preseason practice game at Singleton Park. Being 20 years old, I called him an old man and told him he was past it ... a total disrespect on my part, intending to get him fired up. It did! And I deserved what I got - the scar and the greatest challenge and most fun I've had playing football. In the end, we called a truce and he kindly drove me round to the hospital afterwards to get a dozen stitches put in.

A remarkable speedy winger / midfield player. He scored the only goal in the Wales v N. Ireland home international at the Vetch in 1970 at the Double Decker end. A game that also saw the Swan's Tony Millington make a brilliant save off a George Best free-kick.

I played against Ronnie after his league days but can't remember where. I never knew him personally but I certainly knew OF him. He was a fast, tricky winger with a goal in him (39 international caps) and we paid a lot (for us) of money for his services. RIP, Ronnie. Thanks for the memories.
