Looks like Reading was the more efficient team to me but that was based on their second half performance because, after we were by far the superior team in the first period, for some reason we fell off a cliff in the second. Reason? Buggered if I know!
I do know that before the game I was concerned about this game and posted as much. Reason? I've watched quite a lot of their games recently, by accident rather than design, and I saw many glimpses of things that I thought would cause us problems. I posted that they were resergent and
@CroJack correctly pointed out that they had lost their last 4 games but I was talking about performance rather than results and they have a striker in Puscas who is always a threat to a dozy defence. Okay, he didn't score but I had noted a fit, energetic and physical team with a few players who had that bit of flair that cause problems. And they caused us problems......... as I feared.
In that second half there were some pretty awful performances that I could see coming from some sloppy work in the first half and I said as much to JF adding that one goal was never going to be enough. Byers, who I like, was guilty of some terrible passing, missed tackles and generally went missing. Much the same could be said of Celina and, to a lesser extent, Grimes. Our midfield became abysmal, a total vacuum in fact, and Cooper left his substitutions far too late to address the situation. Meanwhile, Reading climbed in and seized the initiative that they never lost.
I thought that Borja was immense and that Ayew had a very good game; understanding that others do not share the same view of Ayew. In the first half Ayew played some great stuff including that assist and his quality showed. No question about it because I looked for it. And saw it. As did others around me who repeatedly applauded his efforts. Ah, but that goal, the equaliser. Well take a look at the video. Ayew was doing the job he was supposed to up front supporting an attack. But we lost the ball and Reading attacked down the centre/inside left channel. Ayew put his head down and chased back to try and help defend by which time Reading were on the edge of our box. Ayew tried to get involved but before he could, the ball was played out wide right to their full back who was in space.
And he was in space because NAUGHTON our left full back had also moved to the centre to try and deal with the threat there. He shouldn't have done this because we had numbers back plus Ayew who had bust a gut to get back and help. Their FB was left in splendid isolation to fire home. Ayew's fault? Maybe in an ideal world he would have bent his defensive run out wide but HE HAD EVERY RIGHT TO BELIEVE AND EXPECT THAT NAUGHTON HIS FULL BACK WAS IN POSITION AND DOING HIS JOB. That he wasn't was not Ayew's fault. Ayew had done all he could to run back to try and help but if Naughton had been focused he would have been out wide marking his man. I guess some will disagree but that's my take based on the hard evidence of the video.
