When you look at the stats it is easy to see that we gave a good account of ourselves. Potter had his curious mix of young charges and more experienced, unused older hands, playing some fine football and they easily deserved a share of the spoils..... if not more. If he can continue to develop his squad playing this attractive, fluent type of football, we have much to look forward to.
Knowing that we have the likes of Fer, Fulton and Bony waiting to come in and bolster the team with some more steel, we should have that ideal balance of attacking flair with some midfield power to support them. Bony in particular should star at this level. He'll not only score goals but hold the ball up for the fliers such as Celina, Dhanda and James to run in behind to cause havoc. And Bony's touch for a power player is easily good enough to set up such chances. I think Oli will thrive off his presence as well. And I haven't even mentioned Montero!
One thing though. In the second half we visibly tired and Stoke came right back into the game. They were picking up all the loose stuff and getting to the second balls first. Passing football requires continual movement to maintain momentum and that requires top levels of fitness. I don't think we have achieved that yet as we looked more and more leggy as the game went on. But I'm sure that will come as we settle into the season.
Despite the loss, I was pleased with the performance and happy to say well done to the lads. And a special word for Routs and Dyer who've had limited minutes this season. They made good contributions in the game, so good for them. Stats as follows (Stoke first):
Possession: 50/50 Shots: 8/14 OT: 3/5 Corners: 1/3 Fouls: 13/13 (Big improvement on our 4 against Forest )
Given our makeshift side I think those are pretty good.
