Piroe on his way out

The Internet is full of articles that Piroe is having a medical at Leeds today with the clubs having agreed a fee for the player.
Let's hope we can use the money wisely .

Good Cullen starts with Yates on Saturday. Piroe can take is minimalist approach to the competition .... and we get cash.

Cash in / cash out on transfers I think we are about even so far this season. The Piroe money would be a nice bubble of cash. Club apparently told Soton to fuck off on Woods.

If we play a 4-3-3 or 3-4-2-1, then Yates, Cullen and Ginnelly can all be on the pitch at the same time.
That would be nice but we seem wedded to 3+2. I can't believe Duff is going to stick with that long term. He's got too much fire power up front to leave it on the bench.

He's scored many goals for us, he is a good passer, and he is an excellent finisher from 18-20 yards out, but, but...

- He's also missed a lot of chances,

- Most of his goals have come from outside the box (low xG).

- He is not good in the air,

- He doesn't use his body to create space in the opponent's box (not physical enough),

- When he has the ball he doesn't attack the opponent's box as often as he should,

- He is not a dribbler,

- He is often lethargic,

- He lacks explosiveness and pace,

- His shots are often weak and easy to save.

In other words, £12m is a good business. I know we have to transfer some of it to PSV, but still...

Fee not disclosed.

@CroJack gave a laundry list of negatives. Can they be overcome, perhaps, may be some are intrinsic to his character and so locked in. As @Victoria Swan said, pretty good business. I would say excellent business under the circumstances.

The tone of the Club’s statement sounds like gone and forgotten already. Seems strange, but reflects the general apathy towards Piroe. Strange for such a goal scorer. Tate generated more excitement when he got on the ball.

Strange that an ex Prem club would bite on him, but not Soton so what does Martin know, also strange that Burnley went for Obafemi the way they did.

It's actually 15-16 million pounds with add-ons.
Dutch press saying it's 14 million euros with some of it going to his former club. Who do you believe?

As for Nathan Wood, we need to sell him for more. Soton have the cash and Boro are due some of it. He's a prospect; he has potential; he's young; he's an England 'Under' player and Martin wants him, so let's see the fee reflect all that.

Based on Duff yesterday, that may have been the bid that the Club rejected. Media are likely to have a time lag in reporting. I think we're at a stand still. It will be interesting to see where Wood's head is at tomorrow.

The high point of the Piroe departure is that, hopefully with other players still not up to match fitness, is that it gives Cullen an opportunity. Cullen finishes well as does Yates. This could prove to be a powerful combination if they can start to play cooperatively ... something Piroe didn't seem to be able to participate in.

What about this one?
I think the sell-on to 'boro complicates things. What is that - 35%? Shame. You really want more to compensate the sell-on because taking less than £7m is a rip. Without the sell-on, I'd take the £10m because his contract expires next season.

You need really good circumstances to maximise the return on a player. I'm sure we'd all rate Wood as "worth" more than £10m, but a commodity is only ever as valuable as an interested party is willing to pay. Doesn't matter if you're selling cars, potatoes or footballers. Remember that time Swans sold Gylfi for £50m? Much more than most people imagined. He went for his ceiling value because he was at his peak, happy, performing brilliantly, the timing was right.

Wood has been ok. He hasn't hit his peak yet and won't for a few years. So his valuation is based at least partially on potential. One year left on his contract ruins that value, because all he has to do is hold out until the close of this window, and he can force a January move when Swansea decide getting something is better than getting nothing, in which case they'll probably take less than £10m. The mixture of timing and the fact Wood is still young and therefore represents some level of risk as an invetsment means interested parties have the bargaining power. If Swansea hold out for more, they risk upsetting Wood, which in turn leads to diminished performances which would damage his market value come January, not to mention hurting the team's on-field performance in the meantime.

Swansea is a team players will always see as a stepping-stone, so getting good market value on a short contract is hard. That's why I like the Piroe deal so much, and that's why I'd take any reasonable offer for Wood, because playing hardball here has too much potential to backfire. I'd push it a bit to see if I could get enough to cover the sell-on, but I wouldn't push so hard as to queer the deal. The writing's on the wall, he's as good as gone, and the money isn't likely to improve much. Mess this up, and Wood walks for nothing in the summer.
