OUR LAST AWAY GAME - CAN WE TAME THE TIGERS

Right, that's us done for this season. My dearest wish is that Martin is thanked for his service and Cameron Toshack is given the chance he should have had a couple of seasons ago. I appreciate that CT has no magic wand and that success under him is far from guaranteed but he deserves his chance to show what he can do. If he could replicate what he did with the 'Unders' that would be a lot. I hope he gets that chance.

If there’s one thing today, the past several games, and this season demonstrates, it is that every minute of every game has to be quality. There is no room at any time to be sloppy, or lazy, or stupid, or give anything but everything. As even a little in abundance can aggregate over 46 games to fuck you up. Whether on the field or in the technical area, you have to learn on the practice field and bring your A game to the match field. Even with all of that you are never going be perfect and things will conspire against you to concede goals and drop points. But, FFS, you can’t do what we’ve done this season and expect a positive outcome.

Lati typified the season on their goal, a total lack of effort and urgency and smarts and respect, to close their kid winger down and deny him the opportunity to cross.

Next season started when the ref blew today’s final whistle and I hope good use is made of the final match. There is no room for graceful goodbyes and farewells for those that think the grass is greener somewhere else. Next Monday I expect to see Manning, Lati and Cundle in the stands; our reserve keeper and what represents our future starting. It is irrelevant what the score is, I just want to see what tomorrow can bring.

I remember watching Robbie James debut on the right wing at the age of 16 in the last game of the season. No idea then that he was going to mature into the player he was going to become, although he had a good game. I want to see our future play.

Martin had three players who are better than Lati as right-backs on the bench today. Naughton (experience), Sorinola (speed) and Darling (blocking crosses). And he still played Lati there. Lati, who is, by the way, as slow as a turtle. And even worse, Martin wants the club to give Lati a new contract. He is actually very vocal about that and uses every opportunity to tell us how important Lati is. This is a proof that he doesn't know how important pace is in modern football.

We didn't find the form needed to keep our flickering hopes alive but we've been on a good unbeaten run. Hope we can maintain that in our last game to give us something to hold on to for next season. Maybe Martin will be allowed another shot at it. My feelings are known. Some stats:

POSSESSION: 38-62 SHOTS: 7-10 OT: 1-2 CORNERS: 3-5 FOULS: 10-10 GOALS: 1-1

For all Martin's post match rhetoric, we never really went for it did we? Crosses into the box for the strikers to feed off were a rarity when we should have been bombarding their goal in an effort to make something happen. Total anti-climax if truth be told.

“Anticlimax” is the word of the day. The major feature of our play was a reversion to the get it out wide, space to cross, but turn back, pass back, nonsense. Time and again, especially criminal on the left side where we were finding all sorts of forward passing lanes.
