Our Championship Rivals

I see Bournemouth have sacked their manager Jason Tindall after six months with the club.

Brentford really are the best team in the Championship, and Mawson's helping them no end against Bristol (he seems to have gone downhill since he was with us).

You know, maybe Cooper was right to sit back and play for the draw against Brentford holding them to just one goal - look at what they've done in scoring in the last two games: seven against Wycombe and now three against Bristol.

Watching Coventry v. Watford, 1st half 0:0.

Coventry are playing some nice pass and move football, but their decision making in the Watford's third has not been good. Though, they already have had 3 big chances, and if they continue to play like this in the second half, then there is only one winner in this game, and that's not Watford.

Coventry are winning all duels and second balls, and they are dangerous from set-pieces. Watford has been pretty poor so far.

Stats in the first half:

Big chances 3:0
Shots: 9:4
Shots on target 2:1
Aerials won: 12:6
Tackles 9:1
Dribbles 4:1
Corners 2:1

Even 0:0 would be a good result for us, but Coventry win would be perfect. I don't see Watford as a real contender for the top two places in the Championship this season.

Some other games today that are important for us:

Bournemouth v Birmingham
Bristol v Cardiff
Middlesbrough v Brentford
QPR v Blackburn
Stoke v Reading

Final whistle Coventry v Watford 0:0. Excellent result for us. We are now 5 points clear of Watford and we have a game in hand.

Some good results for us in the first half so far. Cardiff can't threaten us so it's good they take 3 points from Bristol.

Bournemouth v Birmingham 0:1
Bristol v Cardiff 0:2
Middlesbrough v Brentford 1:0
QPR v Blackburn 0:0
Stoke v Reading 0:0

It's now Middlesbroug 1:3 Brentford.

Brentford will win this league. Twenty games in a row without a loss. Impressive.

We are now in third place.

Now make that seven goals, three goals and four goals in each match since they were held to one goal by us (that's an average of 4.6 goals/game!!) - agree that Brentford will win the league.

I fail to see it's a forgone conclusion that Brentford will win the league.
Played....................won.....................drawn..........................lost.........................goals...... for...........against .......................GD.........................points.
Brent 27............... 15.........................9.................................... 3 ...........................................52 ..............27 .......................... 25 ........................54.
Swans 27...............15 ......................8 ....................................4 ............................................35 ..............15 ...........................20 .......................53.

With only just half the season gone I feel Brentford have already peaked, we on the other hand are still improving, and improving dramatically, almost game by game. I think the squad has now acquired that final ingredient, confidence in themselves.
Regarding the above stats, how many times have we been cheated out of points by officials, this season alone.
OK maybe Brentford are high scorers, but 10-0 or 1-0 is still 3 points.
There's a long road ahead yet, and I feel we are geared up every bit as good, if not better for it.

Brentford have to score goals because they concede almost twice as many as us - goal a game. In comparison, We only concede a goal roughly every other game. They are winning by 1.93 - 1 per game, we are clearly winning by 2.33 - 1 per game normalizing the goals against to 1. We have a better margin to victory. They look flash because they score goals, we are flash because we rarely concede plus out score our opponents.

Excellent brand of football can't "peak". That's why I expect Brentford to continue trashing other teams and win the league. Of course, they can lose a game of two, but in the long run the superior football they play will prevail.

What is separating Brentford from the rest? They normally dominate games and they create a lot of high quality chances, like no other team does. In 95% of their games they created more big chances than their opponents.

Brentford's football is a combo of high % of possession (5th) and passing accuracy (3rd), high number of shots per game (3rd), high number of shots on target per game (3rd), low number of shots per game allowed against them (2nd best), creativity (most goals scored from open play), they are second for goals scored form counter-attacks, they are joint-fifth for goals scored from set-pieces, they win many penalties (5 so far) etc.

When we compare Brentford with Swansea stats the differences in style of play are obvious. We are better in most defensive parameters, and they are better in most offensive. Though, there are some interesting things like:

- Brentford are better than us at preventing shots against, but still they have conceded double as many goals from open play and set-pieces, which means we have much better defenders. They have a pretty good goalie who makes 2,4 saves per game, and they are better than us at blocking crosses.

- We are better than Brentford at some attacking aspects: we play more in opposition third, we shoot more from inside box, we make fewer unsuccessful touches per game (which means our players are technically better), and we score more goals from set-pieces.

The latest odds favour us as third favourites to get promotion. The odds are as follows:

Brentford: 2/9

Norwich: 1/3

Swansea: 10/11

Watford: 7/4

B'muff: 2/1

Reading: 9/2

Blackburn: 8/1

Cardiff: 40/1

Boro follow Blackburn at eighteens, so the bookies seem to have agreed that the top seven above will fight it out for the Premier League. Makes our game in hand against Blackburn very important to maintain our challenge and keep them out of the equation. Unless we have a crash of unmitigated proportions we look well set to at least make the play-offs and, apart from Brentford, there's no other team I fear - although, as we all know, anything can happen in a one off game. Let's hope we can make it this time.
