It seems the club have approached Barnsley manager Michael Duff. If we appoint him, we won't play passing football. He prefers high-pressing football and doesn't care who has the ball. I know @jackodiamonds will be pleased but I won't be. I think it's a shame we can't find a manager who understands that top clubs need to do both - dominate possession and be aggressive off the ball. Vincent Company understood that and Burnley are in the Premier League now. Martin didn't understand that passing football can be both attractive and effective when played at a higher tempo, when you don't play it from the back under pressure, when the vast majority of passes are forward and when you attack the box as soon as you get into the opposition third. We only started playing proper football in mid-March 2023 and the results have followed. I'm afraid if we bring in Duff we'll go to the other extreme and become a hoofing team. I fear we'll have no idea how to beat a good passing team or a pressing team that is physically stronger than us.

Unfortunately it looks like we're closing in on Michael Duff having established that his release clause is £500k. This is not a good move for us. I'd rather have kept Martin given the way we played in the last nine games or so. Yet another mistake from the ignorant suits at the Liberty. If this guy comes in, not only will our passing game become a thing of the past but we'll also look bad when we lose games. Barnsley were a powerful, physical side. We are not. But I guess that's too much of a stretch for our recruiters to take on board. EMPLOY CAM TOSHACK, YOU IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give the guy a chance mun , he will tighten the defence and increase our high press , faster transitions and higher all round intensity , say goodbye to walking football and give us something we can enjoy watching .
We have the players , just let them play , I think he will do OK for us .

Of course I'll give him a chance if he is appointed but my gut feeling is that it won't work out. We'll see. Be delighted if I'm wrong.

It's not rocket science to look at a manager, his background, and recent history, and figure out goodness of fit.

Look at BoBo. He walked in with an attitude and out as a failure. Martin came with a reputation for madness, continued it, and we never achieved what we had under Andy Pandy.

On the other hand Andy Pandy came in with limited credentials and achieved considerably better than Potter and Martin.

Kieran McKenna will tear this league apart next season. His Ipswich team have scored 101 and conceded only 35 goals last season. Goal difference of +66. W28 D14 L4. Most shots per game, most shots on target per game, best possession %, best passing accuracy, fewest shots against, most goals scored from set-pieces, most short passes, third most crosses, fewest crosses against...McKenna's possession-based football is what Martin's football should have been or what Martin's football was like in our last 9 games last season.

I'm actually not completely sold on Duff either. I like a high press and a team that is laser-focussed on shooting, but from the numbers alone Barnsley look a little bit too much of a physical long ball side as other have said. They also take a lot of long shots, which is the poor man's way of getting high shots-taken numbers, and low quality shots aren't worth much.

I guess we'll see. It might be that he has more flexibility than we've seen and simply used a system that best fit the players he had at Barnsley.

Duff has 2 years left on his contract. That’s a lot of comp for somebody who managed at Burnley U21, Cheltenham, Barnsley.

sorry, but I can’t help it 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️wtf are we doing. We seem to be slipping backward. I bet all of the players are going Duff who? It’s going to make Soton’s raid so much easier. A totally non-aspirational appointment. Cameron Toshack, where fore art thou? If we’re going for lower league no-names then why isn’t CT in the mix.

Yeah, I noticed that too when I watched Barnsley highlights from the 2022/23 season a few days ago. Lots of speculative shots from 25-30-40 yards going in, which tells me they were lucky to get into the play-off places.

What do you think about the Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna?

A lot more positive. KK has a pedigree. Assistant Manager at United under a series of managers. Has coached at multiple levels for top clubs.

Worth the comp and the expectation.

Looking back over the last several years, the number of big names that bookies touted as odds-on to be the next manager and never materialized is remarkable. So you never know.

Through sheer ignorance and STUPIDITY which abound at the Liberty. I'm sure Cam would accept a trial contract for a season with an option to extend if he performs. He wouldn't ask the earth for a salary and we'd save £500k if he was successful. That's too much common sense for our suits to take on board.

Done deal ... Michael Duff | This club matches my ambition and I'm excited to get going | Swansea

The Duffer gets his first taste of reality with Cardiff away after the international break in September. Will he mold us or break us by then.

Apparently, after check-in at Fairwood, there's a week long training camp in Spain. He'll get an opportunity to get all the players onside and stop any run-aways to Soton.

While there's a vast sea of unemployed coaches with top level experience, why do we have to pick from lower levels.

Wishing him well, but I'm underwhelmed. Why does supporting this club have to be so fucking difficult.

What the hell does "more progressive" mean? Lots of cliches and buzz words. Nothing that excites me and hard to imagine it will excite the players. I'm underwhelmed.

There is a reason why these coaches with top-level experience are unemployed.

I don't care where he comes from, I don't care how much experience he has - it's the style of football I'm interested in.

By the way, Martinez had no experience before he started managing us, we asked Rodgers who? when the club appointed him, the only experience Potter had was in the Swedish league, Cooper had no experience at any level, Martin managed MK Dons... for God's sake, Murinho was a translator before he started managing football clubs.

I'm with @The Blobster on this one. Give the man a chance. Let's wait and see. It could've been worse.

Because it's difficult to compete at the top level and ownership have trigger fingers and over time fail to invest in the squad or the DoF acquires poor quality. This doesn't mean that they are not capable of making a big go of it at the Championship.

A lot of them don't want to manage in the Championship because they know there's less money and they're afraid of ruining their careers. What's more, the vast majority of Championship clubs can't pay the wages they demand. Finally, they all have so much money they don't need to work for the rest of their lives.
