LAST CHANCE SALOON FOR DUFF

3 goals but another disjointed performance , I'm still not convinced by Duff , let's hope this does not give him more time at the helm .
Wednesday were awful and are now bottom of the league .

Expected result. About fucking time. Means nothing in the grand scheme of things. We need to keep repeating. We’ve had a series of totally disjoint shit results, we now need a series of increasingly cohesive wins.

Walsh was asked his opinion about the performance and he said that the result was of paramount importance today but intimated that we haven't played particularly well. He added that we should go back to doing what we did well under Martin (playing passing football) and later his co-com said much the same thing.

As welcome as this FIRST win is, let's not forget that one swallow doesn't make a summer. Wednesday were described as being 'pretty awful' so beating them at home doesn't tell us much. The actual performance did and MUCH improvement will be needed if we are to build on this. Far better teams lie in wait and we won't beat them playing like this. Duff should still go. He's not right for us and what we do.

Speaking of Martin, Saints lost against Boro today, 2-1. At this rate, he'll get sacked before Duff.
After the first four games they had 10 out of 12 points, they were in fourth place, W3 D1 L0, scored 10, conceded 7, goal score +3. Goal difference separated them from Norwich in second. During that period between the start of the season and 26 August they played pretty good football. What's interesting is that out of the 7 goals they conceded 4 were conceded against Norwich when they played 4:4. Tella, Edozie and Che Adams were flying in the attack.

On 26 August, their right winger Nathan Tella was sold and their centre-back and captain Jack Stephens was injured.

Between 26 August and 23 September:

W0 D0 L4, scored 2, conceded 12. The worst run of form in the Championship.

I don't think it's a coincidence that they started to lose their matches after losing Tella and Stephens. As we all know, when Martin loses key players he panics. He plays players out of position or keeps better players on the bench and is reluctant to use them. What I read on the Saints message boards confirms what we already know. At Swansea he refused to play Fulton, Oli Cooper and Cullen.

Good result; iffy performance. Michael Duff probably earned a stay of 'execution' today but things are far from right with the team. Some stats:

POSSESSION: 57-43 SHOTS: 12-10 OT: 4-1 CORNERS: 2-5 FOULS: 12-16 GOALS: 3-0

Points of interest elsewhere include another Piroe goal for Leeds from a Dan James assist and Whittaker got 3 in Argyles 6 goal romp whilst Cundle also netted for them. Not much else to add other than I welcomed our 3 points but tempered with the probability that Duff stays for a while longer.

Watching Southampton highlights is like watching reruns from Swansea last season too, at least when they get scored against. It's always the same - 3 defenders running backwards with little to no marking as the opposition takes a nailed-on chance.

Whitaker was let go on Duffer’s watch. Play Whitaker in place of Pato at #10 and we’d have an even stronger line-up.

Whether by luck or judgement we’ve finally acquired players that can actually function as wingers wide forwards and attack defenders. Before he was taken off Ginnelly was causing havoc on the left side. Hopefully the 3+2 will now wither away and we can actually attack teams with a purpose.
