Downes has signed from Ipswich, does this mean Grimes is on his way out ?

Not available for tonight's game but will be in contention for a place against Sheffield Utd .

I don’t see Grimes going anywhere. Last week’s performance was underwhelming. He tried to be busy and make himself available for a pass, but frankly did not approach Leon’s level and León never went anywhere and was only considered a Prem player when he played for us in that league.

I think it was a commentator who said something about Fulham having an interest, but unless it’s for money why leave us to go to them.

Downes at 22 has played 39 games in the championship, 53 in L1 and 10 in L2, plus a handful of cup games.
Injury and a transfer spat limited appearances last season to 25. He was told this past summer to train with U23 and that he was persona non grata. He’s been itching to get the hell out of Ipswich for over a year.

what is his attitude coming into us? His he coming to grow and accept his role or carry his cob.

I don’t see Downes as a replacement for Grimes but to augment and drive competition for places. He plays strictly up the center of the park. As a result, I expect to see Fulton at his best to start or be on the bench … a good thing.

He tried to force a move to Crystal Palace who were interested in signing him.
He is a good and experienced player for his age. Likes to tackle and dribble. Last season he had 86% passing accuracy, which is pretty good but still not at Britton and Ki's level.
This could be a good signing because I think both Fulton and Smith are more valuable in the central, and not defensive midfield. Under Martin we'll be pushing opposition into their own half. Fulton can score goals whilst Smith is good at providing through balls. That's why they should be playing higher up the pitch and not in the defensive midfield.
