Derby v Swansea

Smith off for Whittaker … about time. Martin is even slower on the touch line than the players are on the field

Kris O'Leary got it right - speed of transition from midfield to attack is just too slow at the moment. The good thing is we have two weeks on the training ground to work on it.

Forest don't seem to have any problems scoring under Cooper. ??? Already got 3 again against Brum. As for us, Martin HAS to find a way to get his team scoring. Suggestion: there are two free agents who could be of great benefit to us. I've already spoken about Jack Wilshire but I suggest we also recruit Wilf Bony as an excellent Plan B. Again!! He is strong enough to hold up the ball and he'd eat this level alive.

Seems to me we've got to start thinking outside the box to start scoring in it!
Newport now in the top half of their division.

Can't find a way to score still. At least we have the break to prepare for the scum. I think we need Whittaker or Cullen to stretch the defenders.

We’ve been running the same play for the last handful of matches …. it’s not working and it’s not a fitness issue

It's simple, we don't create chaos in the opposition box.

How do you do that?

  • more crosses (it doesn't matter whether they are accurate or not, they just have to be put in with more power)
  • more shots (it doesn't matter whether they are accurate or not, there will be rebounds and deflections, but ideally more shots on target)
  • more dribbles in and around opposition box,

With other words, every time we come close to or enter opposition third we either have to put a cross in, shoot or dribble! This must be the rule! Without any hesitation. Just bomb the opposition box with crosses and shots or attack it by taking on opposition defenders. That's what Klopp's Liverpool do. They simply keep putting pressure on the opposition. And it doesn't matter if the shot or cross is accurate! They keep coming back to cross and shoot all the time. And what do we do? We pass the ball around or even worse we pass the ball backwards!

Our players (and probably Martin as well) don't understand that creating constant chaos in the opposition box is more important than putting in two accurate crosses or shots per 90 minutes.

"I'm sure we'll get that thrown at us, 'all the possession and nothing', but we created a lot. We had good chances. Someone has to give them self up to put the ball in the net."- Russell Martin

I think I have to take an eye test at Specsavers because I couldn't see "created a lot" anywhere in the extended highlights. We had two good chances, the first one is Bidwell's in the first half, and the second one is Cullen's in the second half. But Derby had two good chances as well. I haven't caculated expected goals for all the chances from the game yet, but I think Derby's ones were better.

I support what Martin is trying to do, but he should stop telling us that we are great, and that we just have to sign new players up front who are going to convert all these chances into goals. He is insulting our intelligence. Yes, we create something, and, yes, we create a couple of chances per game, but that's not 'a lot'.

"I'm really frustrated. We deserved to win. We were so dominant." - Martin

No. we didn't deserve to win.

"We had 10 shots in their box, that needs to come to more." - Martin

Having many shots in the opposition box is good, but shots should hit the target if you want them to come to more. It's not about shots, it's about quality shots!!!

Good performance but no prize of 3 points that the performance deserved. We dominated a team on their own patch that would be above us in the table but for the points deduction. So not all bad. The lack of goals? Piroe has shown he can score with CONSISTENT service but he's not getting it and neither are the chances we're creating of good enough quality. I feel we're not far off but it's frustrating that we can't get the goals our dominance deserves. We need the midfield to chip in more and give our strikers better service in the final third. Yes, we do all that on occasion but we need to be doing it more often. Note that the MOM was split between Hamer and Nauts in the reports I read. Suggests we could have lost this. Some stats:

POSSESSION: 24-76 SHOTS: 6-15 OT: 5-2 CORNERS: 0-4 FOULS: 11-19 GOALS: 0-0

I see that Derby got 5 of 6 on target whilst we got 2 from 15. There's a clue there somewhere.

We had only 2 attackers in our starting XI, Piroe and Paterson. All other players were either defenders or defensive/central midfielders who normally don't score goals. I really don't expect Bidwell to score even if there is an open goal in front of him, and it was him who had our best chance at Derby.
If we want to score goals we simply have to change formation to 4 at the back, play three strikers up front and two attacking midfielders behind them (Paterson and Ntcham).

The same old spiel he used to spout when at MK Dons, always on about how much possession his football produces, he seems to think possession in the opposition half is the be all and end all of football. His footballing style reaches a point where the opposition allow you to play about with the ball in their half, never about the amount of goals his football produces. got a bit of a slagging when i pointed this out on his appointment, but it's following a repetition of MKD's play.
