COVENTRY

Martin rightly struck a note of caution after the game. Yes, of course we played well but after going 3-0 up we tailed off badly instead of going for the throat. But I'm not carping because this was two wins on the bounce and all three goals were quality and scored in the way that we've all been demanding on here. Note that Coventry still managed more shots than we did and more on target. Nevertheless the signs of improvement are definitely there and, if we can keep it up, I think we can give Fulham a run for their money. That's providing we don't gift Fulham, and Mitrovic in particular, any gifts from our habitual defensive howlers. Some stats:

POSSESSION: 53-47 SHOTS: 8-12 OT: 3-4 CORNERS: 1-4 FOULS: 9-11 GOALS: 3-1

Which of our three goals owed most to our possession based patient build up?

Anybody?
Yes, bit of a shame we didn't score a 26 pass goal. but there you go. that's football. they all count,:)
Probably had a bit of the Fergie hair drier treatment for that after the game.

I hope that Martin now realises that the best way forward for us is to mix it up. Play possession by all means to starve other teams of the ball then tire them out before striking with some direct play. It keeps the oppo honest because they never know when we will go direct. Rival team managers have worked out our possession game with Mark Robins, the Coventry manager, saying that they knew they had to get at us to force chances and opportunities. They did that and succeeded in creating some good chances. Luckily for us they failed to take them. But the obvious way forward is to play a mix of direct and possession football. Far less predictable and more difficult to deal with.

Martin also needs to recognize that playing Piroe as #8 and Obafemi as #9 is critically imported.

Smith is definitely worth another look as a LWB. He's got more in him in that role than Lati and others.

For me, I'd like to see Oli on the left side instead of Pato especially with Smith as LWB.
