It was a good World Cup but I still felt there was something missing! Teams such as Holland and Italy for instance. When I saw countries such as Panama there instead of them, it felt wrong. They proved no more than chopping blocks and I'm certain that the likes of Italy and Holland would have offered far more of a challenge in the Finals.
I get that FIFA want to spread the word globally to develop the game in other countries but I thought that the Finals were devalued because of this policy. In Ryder Cup golf selection (European), the top 10 qualify as automatic picks and the captain can also select two wild card players. Without going into the nitty gritty detail, I feel that the football World Cup should be based on something similar to ensure that the best teams get there. In no way could Panama be described as one of the best teams in the world.
Okay, they got through their qualifying group but how strong was it? Not very, must be the answer. Some groups are far more difficult than others, which makes it unfair, in my opinion, because I reckon that both Italy and Holland would beat Panama 9 times out of 10. The Finals should be based on meritocracy and nothing else.
