Previous hat tricks which I have seen:
Leon Knight at The Liberty.
Bob Latchford atThe Vetch Field.
Both of these in League matches.
Nathan Dyer was robbed of a possible hat trick by de Guzman.
My mind is so slow now that when I comment on a previous post five more have already had their five penny worth.

The more I see of Williams, the more I wonder why start anyone else. He’s got all of the key elements in abundance. He just needs game time to bring them out and polish them up. From what I’ve seen so far, he’s got to start in preference to Downes and Smith and probably even Fulton.

Laird is another player that absolutely has to be on the field … any position but Benda’s, just get him on the field.

I was in just the right spot to observe Laird last night. He was ALWAYS ready for the through ball even when CM were obviously looking the other way. Maybe he’s too good for some of our lot, but the manager will soon work that out with a couple of sessions.
I would play him and Connor together on the right, they can work out who does what, when and to whom. Probably a more even split than the old Rangel/Dyer combo.

@Behindthegoal ... great idea on the Roberts / Laird combo. Or even move Roberts into midfield alongside Grimes and Williams. But Roberts and Laird have to be on the field.

How did Joseph look to you. He appeared to be strong coming onto crosses in the first half highlights.

It can't be done unless we switch to four at the back, which I don't think Martin will do.
I think Laird and Roberts may be flexible enough to assume new roles on the pitch. Roberts could become R/CB with Laird as R/WB. One could shift into a midfield slot. Against Argyle we had a 3-4-3 or 3-4-1-2 or some hybrid of something or other. Martin is nothing if not innovative in who he plays and in what role that defies conventional description.

I am not sure about Roberts as CB. He blossomed under Cooper as WB and I'd rather keep him there.

Laird could eventually play as ATM instead of Paterson. He likes to dribble, attack the opposition box and tackle. With other words, he can create chaos in and around opposition box. Also, he's got pace, so as ATM he would be valuable when we counter-attack.

Indeed I think Laird could be highly creative in the ATM role and he's athletic enough to be true box-to-box.

We'll see what Martin has hatched when we return from the international break if not before.

Good discussion, lads. We won't know how Connor will fit in for a while yet but, meantime, I'm really interested to see how we go against PNE.

They will, Laird plays more midfield I'm not sure what Man Us plan is for him. I have no doubt this is what Martin will do. Watching the highlights now, Whittaker had 3 great goals. All of them are what you want from a striker. Class finishing, a great curl, power strike, and a pass into the net. He's still only 20, they should extend his contract while we still have him.
