I've moved Blob's post below to avoid confusion between two threads on the same subject. No favouritism involved - it was easier to move the shorter post. :)

For the 16th time in the last 19 seasons we start the season with yet another away fixture , a repeat of last year's opener with a trip to Middlesbrough ! The following Saturday brings Sheffield United for our first home game , a tough start to the new season .New year's day sees the Baggies visit the dot com whilst our last fixture is a game at home against newly promoted Charlton.

16 out of 19 away starts smells a bit fishy to me , what do you think ?

Fishy ... and inconvenient for me, was hoping to see a home match on 8/9 at the Liberty. Oh well. We have to play these teams sooner than later. Better to get them before they have their sea legs under them ... hopefully we do. A good test for us to evaluate whether Sheehan's magic run from last season can continue and where we stand as a contender for promotion.

We've got a home draw in the Carabao Cup at least when we entertain Crawley. I expect us to beat them and hopefully go on to have a good run in the cup competitions for a change. They provide extra income and will give Sheehan the chance to utilise his squad against the weaker teams to give younger players some experience.

Some strange faces in there for me. Time was when not only did I know the name and face of every single Swan but I could also name every team in the First Division from #1 to #12. In those days, of course, teams didn't have the giant squads they have today and the starting 11 and sub usually performed every week - subject to injuries and suspensions obviously. How times have changed! Maybe not for the better.

The numbers seemed a little thin. New players' contracts would likely begin July 1 and so they would report then. Usually, the first day is all about health workups
