ROTHERHAM

Bristol and Preston lost. Cardiff another draw. Stoke yet another draw. 8 points above 7th with a game in hand. It seems like our best hope at automatic promotion is Norwich dropping. Brentford is in form. Playoff matches with either Watford, Bournemouth, Reading. We could win the hard way but I'd rather not go through that.

I was about to mention that. With Cardiff picking up 2 points in their last 8 matches, all the sides below them have been climbing up. They could drop to 18th. Rotherham would have to pick up a lot of wins for Cardiff to drop to relegation though.

Today’s game was remarkable in terms of our midfield. From watching without looking at the numbers, on the one hand, with Dhanda on board, we lacked authority, ball ownership, second ball wins etc, which improved a little with the introduction of Fulton ... on the other hand we saw stellar goal production out of the midfield itself. 3 goals that were each goal of the month candidates if not goal of the season. One of our weaker midfield performances of the season in general, but our best midfield performance in terms of goals in many a season.

To be honest I'm not getting carried away and have reservations about a shabby display against limited opponents who gave us a great deal of trouble. Those three brilliant goals musn't blind us to the fact that our overall performance was disjointed and well below that of a team that stands tall in second place in the table. Some stats:

POSSESSION: 48-52 SHOTS: 13-6 OT: 2-5 CORNERS: 7-7 FOULS: 9-10 GOALS: 1-3

Note that Rotherham managed twice as many strikes as we did and it was fortunate that, for once, we were wearing our shooting boots with 5 from 6 on target! If we were to get promoted, unless we spend a lot of money, we could well set a record low of Premier League points as we became the whipping boys of almost every team in the Division. I look at Brentford and I look at Norwich and I see teams that could reasonably cut it up there and make a decent fist of it with the way they play. I look at us and I just don't see it. We have no pace whatsoever as a team; our passing is second rate and our ball retention equally as bad. Give the ball away in the PL and you don't see it again for a long time until you are picking it up out of your net!!

When we were promoted under Rodgers we had realistic hopes because we were different, almost continental in the way we played hence the nickname we eventually acquired, SWANSELONA - and we literally gained worldwide acclaim and praise at the highest levels from pundits and famous international players. We kept the ball, passed the ball and I knew that we would survive up there. One of the Neville brothers once asked his sibling what he could expect when his team played us. "For God's sake don't give the ball away," was the reply, "because you won't see it again for a long time." I have no such feeling about our present team. Brentford outshot us 21-2 on our own ground, so I shudder to think what top tier teams would do to us.

I'm not trying to be a rank pessimist, just attempting to be pragmatic. We do have the basis of a decent Premier League squad but undoubtedly we will need HUGE player investment to give us a realistic chance of staying up. Will we get it? I doubt it as I see the owners interested only in paying investors their dividends then lining their own pockets with any surplus. It's obvious that that's the only reason they bought the club as they've never invested a cent of their own money and I don't see them doing so any time soon. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think so and we can only hope that these carpetbaggers will sell the club to someone who cares then fuck off into the sunset.
