Quality chances

In our first two games this season Swans have created 12 quality chances against two top ten Championship teams from last season. We allowed 7 quality chances against us and that number would be even lower had we not gifted Sheffield United two chances.

Quality chances:

Sheffield United 4 - Swansea 5
Swansea 7 - Preston 3

Not too bad.

Appears to me that this driven by perhaps two things: first we have more creative players in midfield and on the wing than last season; wingers are playing higher up the field in general. McB is the one who tends to drop deeper to defend, wingers are not as manic about dropping back to support our FBs as they were last season.

Thoughts ?

Yes. I've also noticed that we don't have as many crosses per game as we had last season, but a) the crosses are of real quality, b) we have more bodies inside or just outside penalty area to recieve crosses

Here are some interesting stats:

Against Sheffield United we had 10 crosses, and against Preston 9. Last season Swansea averaged 18 crosses per game in the Premier League.

Sheffield United had 29, and Preston 31. And what did they create? Almost nothing.

Average for crosses per game last season in the Championship was 19. Derby, Wolves, Leeds, Norwich and Fulham had the lowest crosses per game ratio, each 16.

So it's not about number of crosses, it's about their quality and bodies in the penalty box. Same with shots.

We need to cut down the number incoming to our box though or sods law applies and someone will eventually get on the end of one !

More interesting stats:

Against Sheffield United we played 87 long balls, which is not good.

But against Preston we played only 52 long balls, which is almost as good as Manchester City used to average last season in the Premier Legue.

It's time for some updates.

Big chances for and against in our first 7 games this season:

Sheffield United 4 - Swansea 5 (result 1:2)

Swansea 7 - Preston 3 (result 1:0)

Birmingham 7 - Swansea 0 (result 0:0)

Swansea 7 - Leeds 4 (result 2:2)

Swansea 2 - Bristol 4 (result 0:1)

Millwall 3 - Swansea 3 (result 1:2)

Swansea 2 - Nottingham Forrest 4 (0:0)
Our worst game so far this season was the game against Birmingham. We didn't create any chances there. We were poor against Bristol and Forrest as well.

In all other games, the Swans have played good (counter-attacking) football, especially against Leeds.

The Leeds game was like an footballing epiphany - a vision of what could be; good for the soul that game was....
