PLAY-OFF THREAD

Post anything on here that's relevant. To kick it off I notice that we are the least fancied team by the bookies to win them, even trailing Barnsley in the odds:

BRENTFORD: 13/8

BOURNEMOUTH: 2/1

BARNSLEY: 7/2

SWANS: 9/2

I guess that's a fair reflection of current form. Some of our recent performances have been redolent of us being relegation fodder rather than promotion hopefuls. I remember tipping Barnsley as dark horses some time ago on here and they've hit form and confidence at the right time. They could surprise a few.

That said, at our best we can beat any team in this division and it's Cooper's job to get the best out of his charges. As far as I'm concerned our remaining fixtures should be used to rest our key players and get them chomping at the bit for the play-off games. Sod the results against Derby and Watford as they are meaningless now. We need fresh, eager legs and attitudes going into the play-offs where it really matters.

But I'd play Cullen in the next two. He needs game time. Overall he did well against Reading but he missed a header that normally he'd have put away with his eyes shut had he been properly match sharp. When Cullen is at it he's always a danger because his instincts are so sound in and around the box. You can't coach that: you've either got it or you haven't and, believe me, he's the best at the club in that context.

I wouldn't start Hourihane because he just doesn't, or can't, put the energy we will need into these games. Every player of each team will be going for it putting everything they've got into winning the Holy Grail of football, so we can't afford to leave gaps for them to exploit because of a lack of energy or input. We don't want any player out there who is just making up the numbers. Every individual must make a contribution and, at the very least, win his personal duel against his opposite number. If they all do that we have as good a chance as anyone.

With possible promotion just three games away I've been indulging in some idiot fantasy for fun. Done this before but we're so close now I thought I'd give it another go. The idea is to compile a team from those ex players (NO loanees) of ours who are now in a Premier League squad on the basis that, if we were back in the Premier League, they'd all want to come back and play for us again. Well I did say it was fantasy!! There's not much wriggle room in terms of choice obviously, so some players might have to be played out of position. Let me have your thoughts on this formation and mention any players I might have missed.

FABIANSKI

DAN JAMES JOE RODON FERNANDEZ KYLE BARTLEY BEN DAVIES

JACK CORK JONJO SHELVEY SIGGY

JORDAN AYEW

OLI MAC

A possible inclusion could be Neil Taylor at RB releasing Dan James to play further upfield. Remember that Taylor played there for GB in the Olympics and didn't do a bad job. Then, of course, there's Pablo who's at Leeds and could play those cute passes in midfield that he's so good at. Anyway, let's have some thoughts on this for a bit of fun.

Key Player
We have been disappointed with our results and performances lately, but when it comes to expected goals in our last five games we should have won four and drawn one. We have won two, drawn two and lost one.

1. Millwall 0:3 Swansea

Deserved win.

2. Sheffield Wednesday 0:2 Swansea

Deserved win.

3. Swansea 2:2 Wycombe

Woodman had a real stinker in that game. Wycombe scored from two shots with low xG values, and missed the best chance with a much higher xG value.

Swansea, on the other hand, should have scored at least 4 goals.

Poor finishing and Woodman's howlers were crucial.

4. Swansea 0:1 QPR

Routs hit the post, then Lowe beautifully released Routs who was one-on-one but his poor touch spoiled everything, and then Smith had a great chance inside QPR penalty box.

QPR had two good chances, so the fair result should've been 2:2.

5. Reading 2:2 Swansea

Once again, we created more than our opponents.

Cabango should've scored and Routs had a great opportunity in the Reading box early in the game. Then Reading scored, and had another opportunity after a Hourihane's misjudged back pass.
In the second half Cullen had a free header in a great position, then Lowe scored from a tap-in after a great move from Fulton and Ayew, then we scored a beautiful Swanselona goal, then Lowe hit the post from a great shot, and Whittaker failed to convert from a rebound. Reading scored their second from a shot with a low xG value after Lowe had fallen asleep and lost his man.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So in the last five games we could have scored al least 15 goals, which is great. We have created many chances, but at the same time we have conceded 4 goals we shouldn't have conceded. Woodman (3 goals), Hourihane (1 goal), and Lowe (1 goal) should have done better.

Since we switched to 4-3-3 we have been much better at creating chances, but the performances have not been so good. Just imagine how dangerous we could be if our performance levels went up?

Here is my team for the play-offs:

Can't. Cooper won't do anything anyway.
There are four games left ... plenty of room for suspension or injury to manifest ... or a pure moment of clarity on the part of Andy Pandy.

I think all the key players are on the field and most importantly Mr. Invisible is not.

Maybe the fact that we have no confidence in us making any progress in the playoffs could be enough to give them the kick up the arse they need, I think we are capable of beating any of them on our day. But gradually our game has eroded under Cooper due to lack of guidance.
They may surprise us as the have in the past. A huge ask but they are capable. A first win may well instil some confidence in themselves, this of course hinges on what Cooper in his infinite wisdom sees as the team to do it.
