Next Season's Squad

Many of the Ipswich players made the step up in the Championship, so much so Tractors will be in the Premier League next season. But is our manager as good as theirs? Definitely not imo.
Kieran McKenna took over Ipswich halfway through a season and finished 11th. The promotion charge started the year after, once he'd had half a season of games and a whole summer of prep to get going.

Williams took over Swansea halfway through this season and has finished 14th. I wouldn't be so quick to judge him or compare him to a man who achieved pretty much the same in his first six months on the job.

Much of my opinion is based on what I see - particularly the flaws in our performances, many concerning the basics of the game. And, equally, on things I don't see that we should be doing. I'm not going to re-hash them here because I think we're all sick of reading about them. But we don't appear to be getting any better despite Williams often claiming that he knows what the problems are. If he does then why doesn't he fix them?

But just compare their experience and respective CVs. McKenna rejected a role at the Liverpool academy to stay with Spur's academy where he had reasonable success. Then he joined Manchester United's academy as manager of the U18s later winning the Premier League Northern Division title with them. He then became assistant manager in turn to Jose Mourinho, OGS, and Ralph Rangnick and it was interesting to note that he retained his position when his superiors were moved on. JM and OGS were sacked but McKenna wasn't and retained his job, so he must have been doing it well.

I'll be delighted if Williams can emulate McKenna's success, obviously, but I don't see him doing so. Really, really hope I'm proved wrong!
