New Boss in Town

Winter and head of football operations, Josh Marsh, are expected to leave their roles at the club. The Swans are working on a deal to appoint Paul Watson, who is chief operating officer at Luton Town, their new sporting director. Can't say I'll miss Julian Winter at all. What did he ever do for us? The Ghost of the Liberty Stadium.

So .... what does this portend for Martin. Some assessments will be done in the near future, I would think, if they haven't been done immediately and have been awaiting the new guy to implement the fall out.

I wonder what part of this has been driven by events around the January transfer window.

We are fortunate that many aspects of Swansea City are in extremely good shape. We play an exciting brand of football under a terrific young head coach in Russell Martin, and we also have an excellent senior management team with talented and hard-working staff across all departments.
Martin is not going anywhere ... unless they can't agree terms or the new guy is full of blarney.

Here is what I think:
  • I like the letter, it reminds me of the Reynolds and McElhenney's promises to the Wrexham supporters. “...privileged and honoured...”, “my vision for it begins with strengthening the connection between you, the supporters, and the leadership of the club. The fans are the heartbeat of all clubs, and you are no different.”, “Myself and my family have been fortunate to spend a great deal of time in Swansea over the past eight months, and we have been blown away by its beauty and the welcoming spirit of people within the city. We are so excited to make our home here.”, “We are beginning to understand the connection this community has with its football club...”, “It is that kind of commitment and passion that I will carry into my work here. I still have so much more to learn about this club and the area, and I know I must earn your trust as a steward and custodian of Swansea City. I am extremely grateful for this responsibility...”. He talks the talk, but it remains to be seen if he can walk the walk.
  • Swans need some passion injected into the club hierarchy. Both the owners and Winther have acted more like cold-blooded bureaucrats than people who are genuinely interested in the club.
  • January transfer window has always been overrated. I don't know why so many football fans think that January signings are so important.
  • I am pretty sure a couple of January signings wouldn't have changed anything in our case. Actually, the lack of signings and the departure of Obafemi have forced Martin to use Cullen.
  • Martin is obviously not going anywhere. His football has been like the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and the question is which one will show up next season? We are now the most in-form team in the Championship but I am still not satisfied with the style of football we play. To be more precise with the pace of it. Also, I strongly disagree with Martin that we should give a new contract to Lati. To play him where? He is simply too slow to play as a full-back/wing-back, and Martin obviously wants to play him there. I can't trust a manager who doesn't acknowledge importance of pace in modern football.

Pace is vital. End of! But it's not just a case of a player's individual pace, it's the pace of play of the team as a whole; the movement of the men off the ball; the snappiness in the passing etc etc. It's about finding that rhythm, that fluency and, when required, that urgency. When Martin achieves that, we'll be getting somewhere.

I was looking at Watson,'s transfers this season, only around £500,000. Mostly signing players free. I will have to take a deeper look though. Fresh ideas will be nice, if there's any extra funds with these new investments. Not getting any hopes up yet however. This is a bit shocking to me, Swansea lead the Championship in cards. 108 yellows and 3 reds.

£2 million for Carlton Morris, a player we wanted from Barnsley. £115,000 for a keeper from the Scottish Prem. The rest have unknown transfer fees.

Sold a RB to Southampton for £850,000 many players left for free. That's just this season. Luton have hardly spent any money on transfer fees. They've signed a lot of players as free agents. It's worked for them they're sitting 3rd place.

Luton have second-best defence in the Championship this season. Lost only 8 games and conceded 39 goals.

If you want to finish in the top six you have to have a good defence. In 2019/20 we had seventh best defence and only by a miracle finished in the play-off places on the last day of the season. In 2020/21 we masivelly improved defensively, we had third-best defence and finished fourth. Steve Cooper knew how important a good defence is in the Championship. His Forest team had second-best defence in 2021/22 when they got promoted.

These are the teams with the best defences this season (the clubs marked with red are in the play-off places now):

Middlesbrough are the only exception to a rule, and that's because they leaked goals in the beginning of the season before Michael Carrick took over there as a manager.

Strange way to start, what rumours is he talking about? Marsh and Winter are not leaving? We will get our defense sorted, we sort the keeper situation out. It's possible we have a new manager next season who won't show favoritism.
