LUKE WILLIAMS

The bookies still maintain that Luke is favourite for the WBA job as he has yet to issue a specific denial regarding his interest in the job. His odds are 9/4 and the second favourite is quoted at 9/2. Just a bit of fun speculation but, if he does go, who would you guys like to see in the job? You probably know my choice - I'd favour giving Cam Tosh a SHORT TERM contract to see how he goes. It would cost very little to replace him if it didn't work out but at least he'd have been given his chance if things went south.

I don't want managers and players to come and go in the middle of the season, and I wouldn't let Williams go now.

You all know the managers I like: Kjetil Knutsen and Jimmy Thelin.

If Williams exits for WBA and we stuff them on Saturday ... poetic justice ... and on the short term at least we'd get Sheehan back in charge. Hopefully this time it would be until the end of the season, then we figure it out from there.

And as Madness proved ... the pasture is not always greener on the other side. It's a sad thing when coaches get out over their skis, jump ship at the same level, and leave one club with potential upside and the kettle coming to a boil, to go to another club where they inevitably start from scratch. And, as we all know, starting from scratch means they have to implement their religion regardless of anything else, tearing things down to "rebuild", moving square pegs into round holes until they can discard and buy round pegs etc. Nobody benefits from that nonsense. It's stupid football and dumb business.

There should be a rule that confines the movement of coaches to end of season unless their contracts are terminated.

As @CroJack said, I would also like Thelin or Knutsen but increasingly I am of the opinion that - aside from shooting - being willing and able to win the ball back is the single most important facet of any tactical system. Williams has Swansea doing that well.

As I am so fond of saying, to shoot is to lose possession but you must shoot to score and you must score to win, so you must lose possession to win. If you can win the ball back reliably, then you have the freedom to shoot at will instead of trying to carve out "perfect" chances which get harder to find the more you chase them.

And if you're winning the ball back all the time, then you're going to get the lion's share of possession anyway.

So my "perfect manager" list includes:
  • prioritises winning the ball back, shooting a ton, pressing high and constantly
  • can inspire a never-say-die attitude and instill self-belief throughout the squad
  • puts players in their right positions
  • will develop youngsters over taking loan players
If I was being really picky I'd add "instructs his team to only ever take direct free kicks quickly and never shoot directly", but that's a discussion for another time.

I agree with @Yankee_Jack that it is incredibly disruptive to bring in a new manager mid-season and only justified if the team clearly is out of alignment with the manager and losing consistently. That is not the case for us at the moment. However, if it has to happen and Williams heads to WBA then Cameron Toshak is the least disruptive choice for the team and the club. I'd agree with @ivoralljack, however, that it should be a 'see the season out' contract and then take it from there depending on performance. Best case scenario in that instance would be to retain Sheehan as his assistant.
