Kieron Freeman Joins Garrick Loaned Out

Weird one this, I guess it's good to get some cover but we just signed Arriola so I wonder why we'd want a lower league player who hasn't really done much. The only way I can see this is just incase Arriola, who just came back from 10 months out with ACL injury, gets injured or gets recalled in April which is allowed in his loan deal due to the MLS starting then.

Pleased for Garrick though; he needs game time and a loan out will do him wonders if he can stay fit and get matches.

We acquired Arriola on loan. He is a right WB. We have been playing Garrick as a RWB from time to time not as a forward / winger. Nobody is high on Garrick at the Liberty clearly, not as a winger nor as a RWB. It's strange indeed.

Arriola has a pedigree, but I'm concerned about is injury and readiness. Freeman must be cover.

No news on Roberts being sold, so that's positive, but now there's going to be serious competition at the RWB slot.

Asoro has just returned as well - mid-loan. I don't think we recalled him. He obviously didn't cover himself with glory at Genoa.

One thing for sure ... nobody can say we're not trying to put the best squad we can together.
  • Lost 3 inadvertently with loan recall (MGW, Palmer, Vik).
  • Lost 4 through longer term injury (Routs, Cullen, Benda, Rushesha).
  • Loaned out 2 (Byers, Garrick)
  • Recalled 1 (Ollie Cooper)
  • Loanee returned (Asoro) - I guess he didn't do much at Genoa
  • Gained 5 (Hourihane, Morris, Arriola, Freeman, Hamer).
Did I miss anybody?

Musical chairs ... everybody is going to have to wear name tags.

Are we net better off. If the newbies are reporting injury free and match fit ... probably yes. I think we're -2 in players overall. I think we're overloaded on the right side of defense / rwb.

We also recalled Ollie Cooper. And Genoa kicked Asoro back.

we have a lot of potential quality arriving, it’s going to make our practice time more demanding and efficient make everybody earn their place.

I think we did very well. Obviously I'd love to have kept MGW as he was running riot at this level but we replaced him with players of pedigree. Morris, Arriola and especially Hourihane all have great CV's for a championship club to bring in. Horry has hit the ground running and if Morris and Ariola can do likewise then I think we'll do very well in the second half of this season barring major injuries.

I think it's interesting that both Morris and Ariola have experience on the wings; dare I say that Cooper has a Plan B in his pocket if 5-3-2 Plan A fails? Our lack of differing attacking options has sometimes hamstrung us into sticking rather narrow if needing to go for a game which we are losing. We aren't just reliant on Connor or Bidwell to provide the width and trust they can do something with it.

I think we’ve had a good window. The “Americans” come here as unknowns, which will be a challenge for our opponents.
That will be a big plus for our cup run.

I like your optimism :)

No, we are not going to win this league imho. Our football is not good enough to justify our current position. We are there due to our defensive resilience. We don't create enough chances, we rarely dominate other teams, we don't press enough, and our passing is not good. Norwich and Brentford play better football than we do, and they have better managers than the one we have. We have to improve massively if we want to have any hope of finishing in the top two. The good news is that our midfielders have started scoring goals. It would be great if Hourihane, Grimes and Fulton could keep scoring.

Though, I am optimistic when it comes to our chances to finish in the top six and I think we can beat whoever finishes in the top six in the play-off. Over two games we can beat Watford, Bournemouth, Reading, Middlesbrough, Stoke, Bristol, Blackburn...

Best I can tell, our competition (Norwich, Brentford, Reading, Watford, Bournemouth) didn’t acquire any new players. Bournemouth lost Josh King.

Actually Brentford signed Winston Reid from West Ham. He is a quality, highly experienced defender who will help Brentford plug the gaps in their defence. They score goals for fun but also let them in so, imho, Reid is a great signing for them. He scores the odd one as well.

Reid hasn't played since that horror injury against us 2 years ago. He could be a good signing but could also be very lacklustre.

What we have now are possibilities. A lot of possibilities. On paper we have acquired quality ... time will tell ... but it's all positive. We have acquired resilience to injury and suspension providing we can fit round pegs into round holes. We have acquired internal competition for places - this has been demonstrated with the arrival of Hourihane and the sudden step-up from Grimes and Fulton. We have acquired a stronger practice squad ... you can only be as good as the challenges presented by those you practice against (e.g. Williams et al had to practice against Bony ... what bruising sessions those must have been).

It's exciting. I'm excited. Bring on the rest of the season.
