So much attacking talent in the squad and they played defensive football. At home. In front of 60.000 English fans. They should have been flying. When are you going to win anything if you are afraid of losing?

At 37 - Chiellini is one hell of a player. The Italian midfield owned the park for most of the game.

Although it has to be said, Shaw connected with that cross almost as good as our Connor.

So @ivoralljack ... is it physically possible to take a penalty with a 3 yard run up ... and score, with a keeper there.
Seen it done. I really don't understand why pen takers persist in hitting them low when so many of them are saved. Moaned about this since God was a boy. That keeper was 6ft 7" and easily covered the posts. Didn't have a prayer with the high shots though. Perhaps footballers are just too thick to work it out. As for Southgate, despite England's good run I really don't rate him. Too many shades of Cooper for me. He's cautious, defence minded and got what he asked for tonight. Italy easily the better team in so many ways.

Our pens mostly were unprofessional and poor. Southgate should never have let the kids take them but in fairness they were brave to volunteer.

Well Gareth can forget his knighthood for now. Quite frankly, even had England won, becoming a 'Sir' just for winning the Euros is plain ridiculous, There are far more deserving people in life - particularly some of those heroes in the NHS.

As for the game, as @Yankee_Jack has said, Mancini took Southgate to school and then some. England just fired blanks all night. Where were Kane and Sterling, the so-called threats? The first half was decent but after that Italy took control and strangled England who could scarcely mount an attack with any serious threat. It was like the Swans. So much was missing. There was little fluency and rhythm; movement was poor; ball retention equally bad and passing was second rate. Italy were better in all those departments and thoroughly deserved the win.

With the huge amount of talent at his disposal, Southgate should have done far better but he failed to make the most of what he had. His game plan was flawed and any potential threat was stifled by his cautious tactics. We'll see if he learned the lesson in the future.

I think a big lack of confidence in Englands penalty takers, especially as Ivor says, non with the confidence to go for the roof of the net. Afraid of putting it over the top. Professional footballers FFS.

Just a word about Messrs Rashford, Saka and Sancho. Sure they missed their penalties and deserve a certain amount of criticism for that BUT let's not forget that they had courage enough to take them when other more experienced players stood back. That's done and dusted, so on to the main point of this post:-

I have to say that I'm absolutely disgusted by the racist abuse these lads have had hurled at them. It's totally unacceptable and I hope that the lads will not allow the comments of a bunch of ignorant morons to unduly affect them. They should realise that most thinking, decent people are 100% behind them and abhor racism in all it's shameful forms. Best of luck and good wishes for the future, lads, your time will come again.

It's a shame that this talented generation of English players is not allowed to express themselves.

It's also a shame that national managers shit in their pants when it counts and apply defensive tactics when they should be brave instead and attack.

I thought it was coming home for awhile there. At least through 5 minutes. What a goal by Shaw and Trippier, couldn't have asked for a better start. Then they just defended for 115 minutes or so. Should have went for another. Did everyone achieve what they wanted from this Euro?

I feel for the young players, I thought it was a mistake to put Rashford and Sancho in at 119'. No chance to get into the match. At least don't make them take one of the first 5 penalties and put that pressure on them.

Chielinni is lucky he didn't get a red. Would have been harsh but the replays of that pull looked very cynical.

Lets not forget Rashford is a recognised penalty taker for Man U. I think his crazy runup caused more concentration from him than the kick itself. I think the more successful scorers were those that took the more conventional 4/5 step runup to the ball. These are professional footballers. Penalty taking is part and parcel of their training, more so in the run up to this game. Agreed there is pressure, but no more than the Italian takers. If there was any doubt in a selected player, then the answer is simple, If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.
