Failing Upwards

Can't resist the temptation to comment and perhaps gloat any longer.

Gareth Southgate is putting on a master clinic in how to fail upwards. Despite being adorned with a glittering collection of attacking and midfield jewels ... top, top players from top, top clubs in Europe ... Southgate is spectacularly showing a lack of any imagination and tactical nous, he is also demonstrating benign neglect and overt tolerance for performances bereft of any character, energy and cohesion within the system and starting XI he has chosen to put on the field.

Am I too hyperbolic in my comments? I think not. Southgate is making our old Duffer look like Pep. On Saturday, Southgate got lucky, very, very lucky, as yet again a lower tier country rose to the occasion and his team for 90+ minutes couldn't string more than 4 passes together and failed to move off the ball for each other.

Southgate could never function as a Premier League manager. There are managers at clubs that will be propping up next season's table that will demonstrate far more guile and craft with far more meager resources.

On a positive note, and with a blush of pride I have to congratulate that Jack Bastard Guehi for getting it done, and done well. Growing into his role nicely and quietly by effectively going about his business. Also, I have to say that in yesterday's match, Gallagher came on and chased and closed down the opponent with the ball time and again ... worked his ass off and showed others the work rate that should be delivered. A leader for Chelsea, could be a leader for Southgate if just given the chance ... and also another JB graduate.

I raised doubts about Southgate on another thread just before the current shit hit the fan regarding England's recent dire run. As I said, given the huge amount of talent in his squad, I couldn't see that reflected in their performances. I don't need to list their failings as a team because we've all seen it and, imo, that's entirely down to Southgate and his lack of managerial ability - his total failure to blend highly talented players into an exciting successful team. He is one lucky man to have held his position for so long and there's no way I'd ever want him to manage a team I support. Yes, that's right, I prefer Luke Williams to him.
