Corona virus

I heard an alarming thing last weekend from somebody that had taken a test at CVS - the national chain of chemists and acquirer of the Aetna health insurance firm. Apparently, the person went into the CVS store, requested a test, and the pharma tech handed the swabs to the person to swab themselves. If true and this is not isolated to that store or one test, then we're looking at a large volume of potential false negatives in Connecticut and nationally.
Yes indeed!
Especially if the guy needs a negative to work/travel

We have a similar situation with the PCR tests. First, they can give you a false negative, and second, whilst you are waiting for the results (some places up to seven days) you can get infected. You are tested on monday, you get infected on tuesday, and you get a negative test result on wednesday.

This could be a breakthrough.

"A COVID-19 test that takes 15 minutes and can be run without lab equipment was just granted emergency use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration. It will cost $5, and runs on a simple card that uses the same technology as a pregnancy test."

"Abbott says that the test correctly diagnoses a coronavirus infection 97.1 percent of the time, and correctly returns a negative result 98.5 percent of the time."

"Most COVID-19 tests available today have to be sent off to a lab for analysis. This summer, people around the United States have reported waiting up to a week for results. “With a rapid antigen test, you get a result right away, getting infectious people off the streets and into quarantine so they don’t spread the virus,” said Joseph Petrosino, a professor of molecular virology and microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine, in a statement from Abbott."

Sounds like a huge step forward in containing it.

"On Wednesday, New Zealand moved to lift the last of its restrictions in Auckland after 10 days with no new cases linked to a cluster that first surfaced in August. The government will now allow unrestricted gatherings, and trips on public transit without social distancing or masks, in the city of 1.6 million people."

Read more about this New York Times fascinating story here (it's worth reading):

The New Zealand government has proved that it can be done. While the rest of the world has lockdowns, many people infected, many deaths, a lot of colateral damage to both economy and public health, no clear timeline when this will be over, New Zealand is back to completely normal life. No fear, no restrictrictions, no masks...

It's actually very simple: close the borders, put people who enter the country in a strict quarantine, implement a short, strict lockdown. That's it. The alternative is the Swedish model with an age targeted protection. The third model, which the vast majority of countries uses is irresponsible and nothing but a torture. Domestic population has been made a scapegoat for an approach that doesn't work. Our economy is being destroyed, and we are not doing enough screening for cancer. Our kids are not going to school. We still import new cases from abroad and we have lifted restrictions while the virus was still spreading in the community. How stupid one can be? We have been betrayed by our stupid governments. Why? In the beginning of this pandemic the vast majority of people were ready to obey the strict rules and applaud the strict lockdowns. At the same time the borders were wide open, and trevellers from abroad were not checked for this virus. And what reaction can our governments expect from people now? I know what they can expect from me: a middle finger.

I'm really pissed off with some people . Living on my own I have to do all my own shopping and, for various reasons, visit a number of shops in my area. These include Tesco Ammanford and Fforestfach; Morrisons Carmarthen; M&S Food Hall Fforestfach; Lidl Ammanford and Cross Hands; Aldi: Iceland and Home Bargains, all in Cross Hands etc. I always wear a mask and have rarely seen shoppers without one in these places. I even had to pop in a small local Nisa store for ciggies last week and, in my rush, forgot to mask up. Quite rightly, a young assistant reminded me of my reponsibility and I went to the car to get my mask - I always keep a couple in there for when I go out.

Anyway, I had a hospital appointment at Prince Philip Llanelli the other day. I was reluctant to attend because of the high incidence of Covid cases in that area. I rang the hospital to duck out but they insisted that I go as it was necessary. Anyway, afterwards as I was out anyway and needed diesel and groceries, I went to Tesco Extra at Trostre Park. I couldn't believe my eyes when I went in - THERE WERE AS MANY PEOPLE NOT WEARING MASKS AS THOSE THAT WERE!!!! 😱😨 Do these idiotic, moronic fcukers have a death wish or what? But, more to the point, if they were carrying the bug then they were spreading it to others. No wonder the Covid rate in Llanelli is so high! Stupid, stupid people.

Look, I get that masks only offer minimal protection but 'minimal' is better than fuck all. I am about to phone the store manager to tell him what I think of what's going on and I will be accusing him of putting profit before his customers' health and well-being. If I don't like the response then his Head Office will also be getting a call.

Finally, on this subject, I am sick and tired of seeing and reading about many of the younger generation totally ignoring the rules and protocol of wearing a face covering in public. If they won't comply then fine the bastards heavily, it's the only language they understand. And, as for those young footballers who've been caught out, as role models they have an even bigger responsibility to the public. I reckon a fine of £50k for each transgression would concentrate their minds, such fines to be forwarded intact to the NHS. This pandemic is a killer and people should be forced to take it seriously.

Promising signs in the fight against CV.
This vaccine is giving the the best results so far with results of initial 90%plus on some 40,000 volunteers tested in six countries.

My daughter tells me there are more in hospital now than in the first wave.
Really? Is it so bad in Wales? The data from England show that the number of hospitalisations is same as the last five years average.

Medical experts were asked in London today if it is time to ease the Covid lockdowns.

Allergists were in favour of scratching it but Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves. Gastroenterologists had a sort of gut feeling about it but Neurologists thought the government had a lot of nerve.

Obstetricians felt everyone was labouring under a misconception, whilst Ophthalmologists considered the idea short-sighted. Many Pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!" but Paediatricians said, "Oh, grow up!"

Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness while Radiologists coud see right through it. Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing and Pharmacists claimed it would be a bitter pill to swallow. Plastic Surgeons opined that the proposal would put a whole new face on the matter.

Podiatrists thought it was a step forward but Urologists were pissed off by the whole idea. Anaesthetists thought the idea was a gas and Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no. In the end, the Proctologists won out leaving the entire decision up to the assholes in politics.

Unbelievable, after 12 months of running our NHS into the ground, thousands of unnecessary deaths, the penny has eventually dropped. arrivals into the UK now have to produce evidence of a negative covid test. New Zealand has made our government look infantile, whereas they undertook these stringent measures from virtually day one and are now covid clear. In our case it's once again closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. This move is 10 months too late ,It's already here so the situation has already drained our finances and economy. It's going to take months to vaccinate the country, so in the meantime it will continue to spread and kill. Our governments reaction to this virus is nothing short of disgusting, we have no land boarders, so common sense tells your it can only arrive by air or sea, and the penny has seemingly dropped, but unfortunately many thousands of deaths too late.

Negative Covid test is not enough. What New Zealand has done from day one was the borders shut down with 14 day mandatory quarantine for all who cross the border, without exemptions. Once when you are in quarantine they test you several times before they let you enter the country. And it was not only New Zealand. Taiwan, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Timor-Leste, Tailand etc. have all accepted elimination strategy with great success. Now they can gradually vaccinate their people without being pressured.

What is happening in Britain, and, unfortunatelly, in the vast majority of other countries, is the result of their mitigation strategy. Not elimination, but mitigation. They have never wanted to protect people and eradicate the virus, their goal has always been to postpone infection and deaths so the statistics look nicer. They call it "flattening the curve". With other words: we'll get the same number of deaths, but over a longer period of time. They say the main goal of their strategy is to prevent hospitals being overwhelmed. We know that it didn't work, the hospitals in Britain and in other countries who implemented mitigation strategy are being overwhelmed. And protecting hospitals should not been the main objective for epidemiologists - their job is to prevent and eradicate epidemics and pandemics.

Why have they chosen this strategy? Money on the one hand, and taking this virus lightly on the other. But from the day one it was clear that this strategy would cost much, much more than elimination strategy. New Zealand has been Covid free since August, and they also had a Covid free period in June and July. So, apart from a six-weeks lockdown of their capital Auckland in August 2020. they have been Covid free since the beginning of June 2020. More than seven months. They haven't had any turists from abroad, but their domestic tourism has been booming. For seven months now they have lived a perfectly normal life, and they have avoided all the bad things these continuous lockdowns inevitably bring with them: poverty, unemployment, bunkruptcies, suicides, cancers and other serious conditions not being diagnosed, domestic violence, young generations totally lost and confused, poor mental health of the whole population etc. Their economy has already recovered.

This is from Bloomberg:

"New Zealand’s economy bounced back strongly from recession in the third quarter, achieving a so-called V-shaped recovery as massive fiscal and monetary stimulus fueled consumer spending. Gross domestic product surged 14% from the second quarter, when it contracted a revised 11%, Statistics New Zealand said Thursday in Wellington. Economists forecast a 12.9% gain. From a year earlier, the economy grew 0.4%, confounding the consensus forecast for a 1.8% decline."

The same has happened in Taiwan. Taiwan, with population of 23 million, has had 7 deaths so far. If we extrapolated this number and applied it to Britain then Britain would have had 21 deaths so far had it implemented the same strategy as Taiwan. New Zealand has had 25 deaths. 25 x 13 (corrected for population) = 325 deaths in Britain. So far Britain has had approx. 85.000 deaths and counting. Only yesterday there were 1.554 Covid deaths during the third national lockdown. Someone should be hanged for this.

These are the arguments many stupid "scientists" repeat in order to defend their mitigation strategy:

1. You can't eliminate viruses ❌
2. Britain is a global travel hub ❌
3. New Zealand's approach would destroy the economy ❌
4. Britain has a high population density. ❌
5. New Zealand is an island ❌

From 1. to 5. it's all bullshit.

1. Of course you can eliminate viruses. New Zealand has proved it. You don't even need to eliminate it if you react early and shut the borders down, just like Taiwan did. You just keep it out. People in medieval Europe knew how to keep it out. The practice of quarantine, as we know it, began during the 14th century in an effort to protect coastal cities from plague epidemics. Ships arriving in Venice from infected ports were required to sit at anchor for 40 days before landing.

2. So what if Britain is a global travel hub? Who cares? And had all other countries in the world shut their borders down, then Britain would not be a global travel hub but a totally isolated country now.

3. New Zealand and Taiwan's approaches haven't destroyed their economies. On the contrary.

4. Population density in Britain is 275 people per square kilometer, and in Taiwan 652 people per square kilometer. In Singapore, another country who is doing well, population density is 8.000 people per square kilometer. Population density is higher in Vietnam and South Korea as well.

5. So is Britain. But you don't need to be an island to beat this virus: Vietnam, Tailand, Laos, Cambodia, Singapore, South Korea, Uruguay, Hong Kong etc. are not islands.

Can't believe what I've just watched on the ITV six o'clock news tonight.
That passengers are still arriving into the UK and are able to walk into airports and walk out without being tested, including flights from South Africa.
Boris quoted " it doesn't seem right to isolate the UK from the rest of the world." When he contacted Covid, did it affect his brain.

But it's perfectly normal to put the whole nation into the THIRD lockdown and let 100.000+ people die just because some people (read: the rich, the famous and the powerful) want to travel abroad? 🤦‍♂️

WELL DONE BORIS.
After almost 14 months Boris has just discovered why thousands of Britons have died, it's because we've been letting in people from countries infected by Covid19 .These people, seemingly unknown to Boris have been carrying this virus into our country. ,.But now, after almost 14 months of soul searching Boris & Co. have come up with the amazing solution. We will quarantine all new arrivals into the UK . And to add insult to injury our health minister Matt Hancock has the audacity to say " I make no apologies for the strict measures we are about to take." Are they not aware of the sorrow they could have saved to thousands of families by introducing these measures a year ago, also virtually bankrupting the NHS.
Possibly the above couldn't happen sooner as it may have damaged the economy, therefor reducing profit margins of business's that 95% of MP's have a finger in the pie in.
