Cabango is Captain - Grimes is Gone

Cabango has been named and announced as the new captain. Ben Cabango to captain Swansea City | Swansea

A bid has been accepted for Grimes. And after discussions, Grimes wanted it out: Bid accepted for Matt Grimes | Swansea

Bye bye for you!

It's a new era. A rebirth of our midfield, of the team and squad. Cabango is a senior international who will grow in experience and stature as Ben Davies steps back at international level.

Have to say, I am excited about the prospects. We now have one of our own leading the team on the field. He is not going to tolerate others falling down on the job ... I hope.

The Club's statement on Grimes is simple, short and sufficient. There is no statement of appreciation for service. Perhaps, this will come. Who knows. Frankly, I don't harbor any sense of loss and I am happy with this.

The humbling, humiliating, pathetic loss to Norwich may have been the tipping point. I can't imagine that sitting at all well with Coleman. He doesn't strike me as the sort of business person who would let such a failure pass without some form of remedial action. The terse statement by the Club says all that needs to be said.

Would have loved to have witnessed what went on behind the scenes after Norwich.

Let's hope he'll be far more demanding and vocal than Grimes. Williams wasted Grimes' talent by playing him too far back where he couldn't really influence the game just as he ruined Abdulai's game by playing him out of position. Grimes is 29 years old and the big salary hike he'll get at Coventry is probably what he felt he needed before his career peters out. It'll be interesting to see how Lampard uses him and what he gets out of him. Certainly the Orient manager got more out of Abdulai than Williams ever did. By the way, Mr Coleman, how come Williams is still our manager?

What makes you think the axe has finished chopping?

Either Coleman has had a heart to heart with Williams, and Williams threw Grimes under the bus, and/or Williams has been told this is your last lap, make it work.

With Widell coming in, all be it for the start of next season, and Grimes going out, Coleman has already determined the course of this season and is preparing for the next. We now effectively have a 17 game preseason for next season to sort out a new framework. Williams is forced to make a significant change in midfield. It may involve a new "system", but will definitely involve different players in key positions, which means things will be done differently and played differently. Hopefully, with more tempo, more aggression, less tippy tappy.

I don't think Cabango is a long term solution. He loves Swansea, he is a local lad, even Welsh international, but he lacks pace, which is a big problem in the modern game. We can't progress as long as our centre-backs and full-backs are not as fast as the opposition attackers. As long as they are not, every loss of possession will mean a big chance conceded. We've seen that so many times in the past 2 1/2 years.

As for Grimes, it's good he's gone, but the timing is wrong. We have a thin squad, and Allen, who is a natural replacement, is always injured. We could eventually play Franco in defensive midfield, with Cooper in central, and either Eom or Cullen in attacking midfield.
