2021-22 Squad

Here's the first event in forming next years squad: the released or retained list depending on your point of view.

In short: Ayew gone, Routs is back.

Commentary: Disappointed that Ayew is gone - is this what he wanted, the club wanted, or couldn't they come to terms.

There are a total of 30 players retained in the list at the bottom, with Routs, that makes 31. There are names there I have never heard of.

Swansea City can confirm its retained list following the end of the 2020-21 season.

Andre Ayew, Kieron Freeman, Declan John and Barrie McKay have seen their contracts come to an end and will depart the Liberty Stadium.

Ayew has been the club’s top scorer for the past two seasons, amassing 35 goals since returning from a loan spell at Fenerbahce.

Freeman joined the Swans from Swindon back in January but made just one appearance in the FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, while both Declan John and Barrie McKay have spent time on loan with Bolton and Fleetwood respectively during the course of the 2020-21 season.

The club, meanwhile, has offered a new one-year deal to long-serving forward Wayne Routledge as he continues his recovery from knee surgery.

The 36-year-old – who has been at the Liberty for 10 years and amassed over 300 appearances – was ruled out of the play-off final with the injury.

Meanwhile, second-year scholars Scott Butler and Michael Murphy have been offered their first professional contracts following their performances for the under-23 and under-18 sides in recent seasons.

Butler has captained the under-18s throughout the recent campaign, and has featured for the under-23s on several occasions.

Murphy, who has progressed through the club’s academy ranks, was a regular in the under-18 side as well as stepping up to the under-23 squad during the past season.

Ali Al-Hamadi, Jacob Jones and Jamie Searle have all been offered fresh terms.

In addition, six academy players - Geoff Bony, Josh Carey, Joel Cotterill, Ben Lloyd, Jada Mawongo and Evan Watts - have been offered two-year scholarships with the club.

In the academy ranks Ryan Bevan, Matthew Blake, Bradley Gibbings, Jordi Govea, Alex Rutter and Jake Thomas have all left the club.

Everyone at Swansea City wishes them well in their future careers.

Retained: Adrian Akande, Steven Benda, Ryan Bennett, Jake Bidwell, George Byers, Ben Cabango, Rio Campbell, Brandon Cooper, Ollie Cooper, Liam Cullen, Yan Dhanda, Cameron Evans, Jay Fulton, Jordon Garrick, Josh Gould, Matt Grimes, Ben Hamer, Harry Jones, Joel Latibeaudiere, Jamal Lowe, Ryan Manning, Lincoln McFayden, Kyle Naughton, Connor Roberts, Tivonge Rushesha, Korey Smith, Josh Thomas, Lewis Webb, Morgan Whittaker, Daniel Williams.

The loss of Ayew will hit us hard and I wish him all the best in the future but I'm glad that Routs got another deal. I'm hoping that Steve Cooper will get a decent job offer elsewhere because he will come good; and that Cameron Toshack will get our post. Hello again football!

Rumoured to be close to signing Henry , striker who scored 21 goals in Belgium last season , second highest goal scorer in their league .

The club should offer a £30.000 a week deal to Ayew with a clause that the difference to £80.000 a week will be payed to him if we are promoted. A win-win for both sides. Ayew says he loves the club 😂

I'd also look to bring back Wilf Bony on a similar incentive based deal. He loves the club, his son is with us, he loves the city and the fans. Hugely experienced he could still be a force at this level.

If nothing else Bony would be a massive mentor for the younger strikers and a huge impact player in the final 20 minutes of any game. And I mean an IMPACT player, banging and occupying 2 tiring defenders at a time would open up space in the final third.

Bony doesn't even need to run. He could just stay there around opposition box, keep opposition defenders busy and score goals. The club made a huge mistake not to sign him last January. Hourihane has been on the Premier League wages and we could have used that money to sign Bony.

Man at the Pub doesn't have those sort of links!
I've found it. Thomas Henry, 26 years old French football player, scored 40+ goals in 71 appearances for the Belgian club Leuven. Tall, strong, skillful and has pace. Rumours say Besiktas are interested, and if they are we don't have any chance.

Really like what I'm seeing of Thomas Henry even allowing that videos always show the best bits. He's tall, strong, mobile, great in the air and two footed with decent control. What's not to like? But, if it needs decent money to get him, forget it. Our carpetbaggers won't cough up. If they do, he might be tempted to join us using us as a stepping stone in a far higher profile league than that in Turkey. You never know.

Been talking to a Besiktas supporter today, he feels Henry is heading for Turkey, he says Swansea's failure to make the Premiership has put them out of the running. He feels if Henry does come to the UK it will be to Leicester, who are now showing an interest.

Every year we repeat the same pattern ... pre-season friendlies against lower level opposition. Coming up we have Plymouth Argyle and Forest Green. Last season we did play cannon fodder to Soton, so perhaps weaker opposition does save some embarrassment, but I fail to see how lower level teams serve as a measure of our readiness.
