Wilmot

We have signed 19 year old Ben Wilmot on loan from Watford for the season. Nothing like bolstering a squad with solid experience ... all 7 games of it.

What are we seeing happen here. Player acquisition based on a Steptoe strategy or the eagle eye of capturing the next Bobby Moore. Over the years we have had a middling to poor record of loaning-in young players. They have seldom delivered the expected value at the cost of giving one of our own assets development opportunity and experience.

We are ultra thin in terms of defensive experience. If VdH gets hobbled or suspended we’re going to be fielding CB’s still wearing “nappies”. In this league that is begging for unscrupulous forwards to take advantage ... the need for a lock-the-door deep midfield and solid play from our full backs denying crosses is going to be critical to avoid a slaughter ... especially when we have the two flower pot men in goal who will never, ever come for a cross.

Caulker’s competition was Monk. He could have played with one leg and been better. Before he came to us Caulker had played: 8 games for Spurs, 44 games for Yeovil, 29 games for Bristol City.

Before he came to us CCV had played: 17 games for Sheffield United, 17 games for Ipswich, a number of senior international games for the USA.

Both players were not green. They had a already been blooded at the senior level. We knew exactly what we were getting, and they performed to expectations. It can be argued that Caulker exceeded expectations.
