Great article... Mulder wins hands down....
But I have been watching Benda in the under 23s ...he is not such a great stopper but his distribution is superb.... Give him a chance pre season!!

Confidence is so much a factor, especially between the sticks. Remember what we thought of Fabianski in his first couple of months?

Surely we can find a keeper with a UK skill set that is tidy with his feet.
Agreed. We need a complete goalkeeper. Aerial presence and commanding the box is crucial in the Championship, unless we significantly impove our passession, passing accuracy, pressing and tackling/fouling in opposition half. If we do that then we won't need to worry so much about corners and set-pieces.

I've had a look at the stats for Manchester City and Swansea this season. Manchester City, because of their dominance in possession, concedes only 2.3 corners per game, Swansea 5.2.

That's a huge difference.

Manchester City also play much more in opposition half. We, on the other hand, invite pressure and play more in our own half. We don't press and foul opposition in their own half, Manchester City do. This has nothing to do with the squad quality, this is simply a part of footballing style. Potter has to add this element to our style of play if we want to avoid set-pieces and conceding goals from corners and free-kicks.

The best defence against set-pieces is not giving them away.

Keepers with the ball at their feet .... please explain something to me. I’ve never seen the point in a defender playing the ball back to the keeper some 20+ yards for the keeper to then give it the big boot down the field and generally plant it on the head of one of their defenders. It’s an immediate surrender of posession, which our defender could just as easily have done from further up the field. In practice, I would expect our defender to be able to play a more accurate long pass to one of our forwards or into space for them to run on to.

In what we attempt to do, we ask our keeper to make shorter 20 yard passes to defenders and occasionally a midfielder around the perimeter of the box, typically to change the flow and direction of play. Is that so tough for any modern keeper to do? We seem to have prioritized playing the ball with the feet over the more traditional skills of a keeper ... it’s never made sense to me ... it’s one thing to use as a differentiator when you have two keepers with superlative traditional skills, but not as a priority when traditional skills are lacking.

The reality is Potter can't prioritize. He's got two goalies who both lack traditional skills of a keeper, and uses the one who is better at playing the ball with the feet. I am not impressed with Mulder either.

This is something we need to fix. We got Dorus DeVries from Dunfirmline - he's now at Celtic. For all of his weaknesses, and dealing with crosses was not a exactly a strength, he was never planted on the goal line and he served his purpose. Surely, there are keepers that we can find to meet our immediate needs and then upgrade to Prem standard as we need to.

The game time he had prior to Mulders injury ! do you think the Swedish connection may have had a slight bearing on it.

Both Nordfelt and Mulder have flaws in their game and are not suitable for the Championship, with most teams relying on set pieces and high balls into the box for their forwards to gobble up.
Plenty of good goalkeepers out there. For example Norwich picked up Dutch International and ex-Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul from Brighton on a free transfer last July and he played in every match for them this season as they cruised to the title and promotion.

It's easier for some keepers than others. An average keeper might not concede much because his team is dominant, so he doesn't have too much to deal with. Because we are so poor at defending set pieces and not cutting out crosses, whichever of our keepers we use will always be under pressure. For me it's a given that ANY keeper should be a good shot stopper otherwise what's he doing there? What makes the difference is how the keeper deals with crosses, organizes his defenders and distributes the ball. Again a personal opinion - I always prefer a keeper who catches the ball to one who habitually punches it. In this day and age keepers are very protected (I think way OVER protected) so why punch if you can catch? Okay, a keeper might drop the ball attempting a catch under pressure but the odds are the challenge will be deemed a foul if he does.
