Still have quite vivid memories of that day even as a 5 year old. more so because the problems of holding a street party on a very steep street.Think everyone brought out their wallpapering tables, these were then blocked up on the lower end to level them, so in effect the tables went down the street in steps.Kids sat at the shallow end and taller people at the steep end. Chairs were also a problem, with everyone sitting in a almost 45 degree side way lean position.
Next morning everything was cleared up in preparation for a big bonfire to burn an effigy of Hitler, it was a huge bonfire, no shortage of materials with all the bombed properties around. But this in turn produced its problems. It started melting the tarmac which started running down the street alight. It actually burned a trench down the centre of the road, eventually a fire engine arrived and put a end to the evenings festivities. But yes I remember it well.
V J DAY later was another story.
