Just for fun have a go at predicting the results tonight. I'm guessing:

Aston Villa 2-1 Sheffield United

Man City 3-1 Arsenal.

Two crazy games. Sheff Utd must be livid at the goal not given. WTF was the linesman doing .... with all the tech do they just switch off.

Easy win for City as predicted but the other game was an odd one. Sheffield United should have won it but for a clear goal that was ruled out, yet it would have been a travesty had they got 3 points. They were lucky to get one as Villa outplayed them. United keeper was awarded MOM, which gives a good indication of the run of play, backed up by the stats all in Villa's favour: Shots 14 to 5, OT 6 to 1 and corners 12 to 4.

I had torn loyalties in this game. As much as I would like to see United press for Europe, I badly wanted Villa to win to put pressure on Brighton who I want to see relegated for obvious reasons. It turned out that the draw didn't much help either team in their ambitions. Such is football life. :(

But I enjoyed the games and looking forward to the rest. By the way, I quite liked the added crowd effects and swapped between that and the silent coverage.

For years we have complained about decisions from officials, then we get this foolproof GLT & VAR technology, it would seem we are back to square one again, a balls up that could cost promotion or relegation.

The technology is fine. It is there to assist. It is there to remove ambiguity. But, it is not there to give the ref and linesmen the day off. They are the match officials. They are still responsible for enforcing the rules of the game. They need to keep up with play and be ready to officiate, rule and overrule as the case may be. Any linesmen doing his job would / should have been in position to view and communicate to the ref that the ball had crossed the line. Their laziness and willingness to sub-ordinate their duty to technology is unforgivable.

I was of the opinion that if the ball crosses the goal line it responds on the refs watch instantly. Players immediately ran to the ref, who shook his head and pointed to his watch. Technology error?? The GLT isnt debated as is the VAR.

The technology developers have issued an apology and explanation. Apparently the technology is not embedded in the goal itself but remotely via a series of cameras from different vantage points. In the melee around the goal in this particular case all cameras were obstructed ....

However, from the footage from tv cameras adjacent / behind the goal, the situation should have been clearly observed by a linesman in the right position. The match officials should have the ability and duty to overrule if they clearly witness a situation that is at odds with the technology that is in a state of failure. The moment we retire and subordinate our intellect to technology we're done!

I was hoping Villa would do the right thing and score an own goal. Silly me!
in all the surge of anti-racism there’s still no room for good sportsmanship.

That would have been nice but, when there's perhaps hundreds of millions of pounds at stake, precious little chance of that happening. On the other hand, how many other teams, especially us, have been the victims of poor decisions by the officials that have cost points, places and huge sums of money? It's football today I'm afraid.
